CLASS C began making comprehensive preparations for the sports festival. The teachers said we could use the weekly two-hour homeroom period as we wished. While Horikita was offered to lead, she declined, likely to see what anyone else had to say and to also think of the situation herself. So instead, Hirata took the initiative as Chabashira-sensei moved toward the back of the classroom, not saying a word. Ayanokouji said some words to me while Hirata was talking. I already knew of the contents, but I wasn't expecting him to tell me it.
After Hirata explained, Sudou imposed a suggestion of his own.
"We should obviously decide based on ability, shouldn't we? I mean, he only one who knows a person best is himself, right?" said Sudou. "If I win, then it's more likely our class wins. That puts us way ahead."
"Well, it makes me kinda mad, but I suppose you're right," a girl muttered.
The boys also murmured in agreement with Sudou. "I'm really not that great at sports. If Sudou's okay handling the recommended-participant events single-handedly, I'm fine with that."
"Then it's decided, right? I'll do all the events for recommended participants," Sudou declared.
"If everyone's okay with that strategy, then I suppose the recommended participant in every category will be—"
"Wait." Horikita cut in just before Hirata approved the proposal. "I've got a supplementary proposal."The other students turned to look at her.
"If we have to choose between these two approaches, then I agree that we should go with the ability system. However, that single tactic isn't guaranteed to carry us to victory." explained Horikita.
"I agree that the most athletic students should take part in events for recommended participants. But, even in events for all participants, we should group the people who have the best chance of winning. That way, we maximize everyone's potential. Put simply, the strongest, fastest students should be grouped together." said Horikita.
"Hold on a minute. Won't that leave slower people high and dry?" Shinohara was the first to object. "Privileges only go down to third place. I don't want to throw away my shot."
"I understand your personal feelings, but it's for the sake of the class." replied Horikita calmly.
"I know it's for the class's sake, but I don't want to lose out on private points."
"If the class wins, the reward will be ample—easy to divide among us. Besides, more class points mean an increase on our monthly private points. The earning of the reward for the private points are certainly good, however if we continue to rise up the ranks, so would our private points. A theoretical exponential increase private point increase is much better than a high yet one time reward of private points. We're already getting over 50,000 private points."
"I know but I don't want to miss out on individual rewards, like earning test points!"
"I understand your desire, but your logic confuses me. If you just studied ahead of time, before an exam, you wouldn't need to rely on those privileges. If you don't like me, it's fine. I can't please anyone, but you could go to Hirata-kun for example." said Horikita, it looks like she left out other names other than Hirata since it's...well Hirata. "I again understand your complain, but not everything can be perfect. Sacrifices have to be made. This is for the sake of the class and for the sake of reaching for Class A, do you understand?"
"But..." Started Shinohara.
"If you want to earn test points, then just study longer every day. What happens if they don't let use private points on test points or something of the similar? It would best to increase your academic abilities so not only can this class be better, but through academic exams, we're likely to pass."
