A LITTLE BACK IN TIME

"SO 'X' put in quite a position you see." After everyone else left, the only ones who were in the classroom were Albert, Ishizaki, Ibuki, Shiina and Kaneda. I showed them the messages on my phone.

"He offered you a deal?"

"Indeed, he did. He's actually quite generous. Well, there's no doubt that he was the one who started this rumor bullshit."

"And that's where those questions he sent come in?" Shiina observed. Yes, those where the questions 'X' had sent to my phone. All in there. All 400 questions that we checked.

"Instead of Kushida being the traitor, it was 'X'. How ecstatic is that?"

"Why would he do such a thing..." Kaneda wondered.

"It looked like he was caring about reaching to Class A but seemingly disregarded it. Or maybe from the beginning he didn't care. His reasoning was supposedly he felt 'pity'. However, since he personally said that he'd let rumors to go about on Class C, he doesn't care about his classmates at all."

"I think that was obvious." Ibuki scoffed.

"Well, I thought about making Kushida plant a cheat sheet inside of Horikita. Of course, in a place Horikita can easily find out and tell X about it. From there out, I could observe how he reacts to the situation. But I eventually filtered that out. It's too risky. I don't want Horikita to be expelled if Kushida did some stupid shit as I know how much Kushida wants her expelled."

If Horikita didn't find out about the cheat sheet and Kushida pulled a move, she would've been expelled. I absolutely do not want that to happen. If Horikita was expelled, the cover for X is gone. Once X is discovered, it won't be as fun. Never mind that, I wouldn't be able to understand him more deeply.

"Regardless of that, what about the questions we checked. Since that mastermind gave us the questions, we're likely to win the exam, right?" Ishizaki asked.

"Even if he said that those questions are legitimate, we have no way in knowing if it's indeed true. But the deal has already been done. He asked for the math cheat sheets, I gave it to him. I had to either significantly change the questions for Kushida or I give him the questions and answers."

I continued on with my analysis.

"I had no choice but to choose the least damaging option. Change the test questions for Kushida. If I gave him the questions and answers, it would've guaranteed a lost for our class. If I didn't change the questions for Kushida, he could've used the cheat sheets to claim Kushida was cheating. Kushida would've been expelled or punished for violating the bet she made with Horikita, a valuable resource gone from me."

"If I gave 'X', the test questions, I would've been played and strung along by his own hands. I had to give him the option that benefited him the least. Damage control if you will, which was changing the questions I did specifically for Kushida. From this moment onwards, once the test starts, Kushida would've lost the bet. She lost right when the deal was made."

That way, Kushida would've lost the bet, but at least I don't lose to the mastermind. That also meant Kushida was still usable, even if she'll question my motives of what happened.

"And those questions there? Not all of them are Horikita's. At least I figure."

"What...? But wasn't the deal that he'd send the questions to you, Ryuen-san?" Ishizaki asked.

"Yes, but he didn't directly say it was Horikita's. When me, Shiina and Kaneda were checking the questions, we all observed that about half of the questions were more or less easy. Class C wouldn't dare to have made those questions. Why would Horikita, in which she focused on defeating me as well, make such easy questions for us to correctly answer."

From there on, I reasoned that the questions that were easy were made by 'X' and the moderate or hard questions were by Horikita. Besides, Class C wants to win, not lose. It would be in their best interest to make difficult questions and not easy ones.

"This mastermind... is really something huh? Not only did he use Manabe like that, but he played us well..." Ibuki claimed. "So, for the questions, he made-"

"He made roughly 200 questions on his own, and another 200 he got from Horikita." I interrupted her.

"He manually made all 400 questions. He wouldn't do all the work just for Horikita to submit the test questions soon. This likely meant that he must've made some sort of agreement with his teacher for his questions be the only questions to be submitted. He misdirected both Horikita and Kushida. He alone must've done this within the exam's final details being announced."

If I, for some reason, didn't figure out that 200 of the questions 'X' sent were fake. We would've been stretching our time and resources too thin. We also would've been focusing on the wrong questions as well. I suppose he did this as a reward if I was able to figure it out. A free 100 class points huh?

"From now on, we will continue to study. However, we will also be focusing on the real 200 questions he gave us. I will make it so that each student will focus on one subject regarding these questions he gave us."

"You'll announce this tomorrow?"

"You'll announce this tomorrow?"
