My eyes snapped open. I shot bolt upright. A sharp pain cut across my brain and I groaned.

"Easy there, Lexi," said a familiar voice. Trisha pushed my shoulders back down into the cot. I glanced about the tiny room I was in, recognizing it as one of the few infirmary wards.

"My head hurts," I groaned. "Where is Aevran?"

She ignored my question. "I know. You have a concussion, but I'm sure you can heal now that you're awake. You've been out for several hours."

"Why are you here? Are you hurt, too?"

"Sure, I did get hurt, but I didn't need to come to the infirmary. But I pretended I did so that Jayden would bring me here along with you." She sat back on the medical table at my bedside. "That was super impressive by the way. I never knew the true extent of your power. It was amazing."

"Yeah," I agreed. "Those demons were such a menace. What happened after I passed out? Is Aevran fine?"

"Well honestly we didn't have to do much. Your tornado squeezed and left you behind down on the ground. It was dark and everyone was too busy gawking at the tornado itself to notice the girl who had collapsed so close to its boundary. The amazing thing is, it continued rotating even after you were out cold. Tyler, Jayden, and I were able to sneak you off the battlefield before anyone spotted you. It dissipated after a few minutes, but not before bashing everyone inside it with other debris. Three of them were already dead; one was unconscious, and the leader escaped with him. The leader-- that's the one with slightly curved, flat, black horns and silver hair."

Like I cared about Raven at this point. "And now for the most important bit. How the hell is my mate?" I snapped.

"Your mate got in that tornado. He flew up and over the edge into it, and almost immediately, you tightened it and got out. You probably didn't see him."

I rubbed my brow. "But I did," I groaned, just recalling the pair of luminous eyes I had observed. "In fact, he probably saved my life. The demons were whispering so many things to me..." I shuddered. They had sounded just like my own thoughts. "Where is he? Is he okay?"

"Yes well... he wasn't fine after the tornado bashed him with a branch."

I paled.

"By the time I saw him, he was slumped between two others. I didn't see his injury, but there was a lot of blood involved."

I gulped, standing up. I had nearly killed my own mate. I was nauseated by the thought. I left Trish without another word, and she called after me, "Careful!"

I barely heard her, already sprinting down the corridor to the other wards.

I paused as our bond heated up, telling me how close he was. I stood at his door. I carefully, quietly turned the handle and peeked in. The room was an exact replica of the one I had just left. And there he was.

I slipped in and shut the door. His eyelids blinked open, revealing irises as green as I remembered. He allowed me to run my eyes along his body. There was no sign of blood anywhere, but there was a small cut on his chin. Aevran stared at me wordlessly, his expression and scent blank.

"Well?" I asked. "What? Wind got your tongue?"

He laughed hoarsely. I shivered. "That was a terrible joke," he scraped out.

I walked closer. "What happened to you?"

He shrugged as best he could. "A branch nearly crushed my bat form. They mentioned five different organs that suffered, and don't even get me started on the bones."
