I clung to Gregory as he sped along, barely even glancing down at me. I wrapped my arms tighter around his neck, my heart hammering in my chest.
"When are we going to attack?" I asked anxiously, looking up at Gregory, who kept his eyes on the grassy plain that we were crossing.
"Whenever we can. It's for both of our family's lives," he replied, slowing to a quick pace.
I looked around. It was getting dark, and I saw a creek rushing by, and bird caws. "Where is your-"
Gregory suddenly dropped down as I screamed. He chuckled.
I smacked his arm. "Don't ever do that again!" I shouted, my voice echoing. I calmed down a little. "Where are we?"
"A burial tomb. They were scattered all over Scotland. This one's deserted," Gregory explained.
A thought popped into my head. "What about Tony?" I exclaimed worridly.
"Don't worry. Rudolph's bringing him too."
"How did he know?" I asked, amazed.
"Vampires send a certain signal when they need to communicate with other far-off vampires. When you went down to see what Rookery was up to with your dad, I sent off a signal to my family," he explained.
"That's...useful," was the only thing I could say.
He laughed as he carried me further into the tomb. Hands touched my arm, and I shrieked.
A child's laughing erupted from beside me. "It's me, Rudolph, Elizabeth!" He chuckled along with Tony.
"How did you get here so fast?" I wondered, rubbing my arm and staring into the darkness.
"Vampires' secret," Rudolph said seriously.
I rolled my eyes. "Some secret..."
We playfully bickered as we walked for about a couple more minutes.
"We're almost there," Gregory announced.
I let out a sigh of relief. "Good. My eyes hurt from straining to see everyone," I complained.
Gregory nudged my nose with his and I blushed in the dark. "Well, maybe you don't need to see..."
Tony and Rudolph made gagging sounds as us older kids laughed, snapping out of THE mood.
"We're here," Gregory said, abruptly putting me on the ground. He slid his gloved hand in mine.
I smiled at him in the dark, wondering if he could see.
"Children? Is that you?" Freda's voice spoke out, a gentle swoon against the sounds of the night.
"Yes, Mother," Rudolph chimed in response. I was amazed how he could suck up to his parents so quickly.
"Gregory-" Freda began. I knew she was looking at our intertwined fingers.
I blushed deeply as Gregory simply stated, "Mother, I was simply guiding her. She cannot see in the dark as well as we can."
"Oh, my sweet Gregory. How very kind of you," Freda gushed as Fredrick entered. I could sense him.
"Well? What is your distress signal about, Gregory?" he said promptly.
"We've found a way to get rid of Rookery," Rudolph piped up.
Fredrick and Freda were silent for a moment when another voice said, "Oh, really? How wonderful!" I recognized it as Anna's.
"Yes, dear sister. We won't have to run and hide from him any longer," Gregory said, pride in his voice.
"Well? What is the plan?" Fredrick persisted.
"We sneak up on him in the day. He won't expect us. His truck is off, so no signals. And he's asleep, like us," Gregory explained.
"Hmm...it sounds good, but there is flaws. How can we go out in broad daylight without getting burned?" Fredrick responded.
We all were quiet, deep in thought.
"We have some costumes from a couple of Halloweens ago," Tony said nonchalantly.
I nodded. "I bet you and Freda could fit into my parents'..."
I had no idea how that would look, though. Five humans (vampires) dressed in cheesy Halloween costumes parading around in broad daylight...
Freaky.
