Sometimes, all it takes is one step, and that's something Lee Suho failed to realize early on in his academic studies. For the most part, he was a dedicated student at Saebom High School. Straight A's, president of his class, and the president of the school's student council—he had it all. But even if Suho had what others wanted, it still didn't make up for a crush he'd been curious about since he was a mere child.
The feeling always stayed with him since he met his childhood best friend. They've known each other since they were kids and haven't been inseparable since—not even when Suho moved to Japan for a few years and came back before high school started. But ever since his return, Suho hasn't been able to move onto a new crush; instead, he's been more focused on the 'what ifs' regarding him and his friend's bond. What if they started dating? What if Suho told his friend how he truly felt? What if Suho got rejected?
The thoughts alone made Suho feel horrible to say anything about his crush to his friend, same with how he felt about someone of the same sex. But if Suho wanted to come to terms with his true self, that meant he had to come out the closet to someone he cared for more than as a friend: Han Seojun, Saebom's self-proclaimed bad boy and his dear best friend.
As the school day came to a close, Suho was busy preparing his speech for an afterschool class president meeting. He was glued to his desk while writing in his notebook, not paying attention to the swarms of students leaving the classroom. But in that crowd stood out one person who noticed his focused nature: Lim Jukyung and her girlfriend, Kang Sujin.
Jukyung leaned against a desk, "Suho?"
He looked up from his paper, "...Hm?"
"Y'know the meeting isn't until tomorrow, right?"
Suho was about to disprove Jukyung's statement until he thought about it, then realized she was right. And his speech wasn't even about the council, it was more about...his crush.
"So I just sat here and wrote for nothing?"
Jukyung shrugged with a small smile, "Maybe. But you had to write a speech this time?"
Suho shook his head, "I didn't have to. I just wanted to make sure I knew what I was talking about."
"So then what did you actually write about?"
Before Suho could even come up with a response, Jukyung snatched his paper up and skimmed through his paragraph with glee.
"...Is this about—"
Suho sighed, "Yes, Jukyung. It's about Seojun."
She giggled while handing Suho his paper. "Go read all of this to him."
"I'd rather spare him and myself from embarrassment."
She playfully rolled her eyes, "But it never hurts to tell him how you truly feel. Besides, we don't have much time left as seniors, Suho."
He sighed. Suho knew there were only a few months left of their last school year, so why wasn't he making the most of them? Maybe he didn't want to make a move out of fear, or something else. However, he didn't focus on confessions or the rising nervousness in his spine as he gently held onto his backpack and walked out of Saebom High's front doors. He surveyed the surrounding area before starting his route home until he accidentally bumped into Seojun, sending himself straight into the concrete. But then, Suho felt a hand grip his wrist, making sure he didn't even touch the ground.
He looked over his shoulder, "...Thanks, Seojun."
Saebom's bad boy nodded with a smile, "No problem, Suho." Seojun let go of his friend's wrist, "Heading home?"
Suho nodded, "And before you ask, you can walk with me halfway, Seojun."
The guy chuckled before walking next to his dear best friend, not missing a step as they continued their walk. A comfortable silence slipped between both males before Suho stopped walking and cleared his throat.
"...Seojun."
He stopped walking, "Hm?"
"Would you be mad if I told you something?"
Seojun cocked a brow, "Something like what?"
Suho couldn't bring himself to say it, to confess. He couldn't be gay, let alone bisexual. He couldn't. He couldn't disappoint his father with the discovery, not at all. He couldn't be bisexual. He couldn't tell anyone how he felt, he couldn't—nevermind. Without thinking, Suho sighed before cupping his best friend's face and...gently kissing him. Seojun didn't even try to pull away. Instead, he kissed Suho back with all the love he'd stored for him over the years. After a moment, Suho pulled away and had the time to clear his mind. He just...kissed his best friend? And the guy didn't push him away?!
"Seojun, did you mean to—"
He interjected, "I meant to, Suho. I meant to kiss you back."
If Suho could explode, he knew he would. But for the time being, all he could do was feel the impending pressure of butterflies in his stomach since his crush basically just confessed—wait. Wait a damn minute. Seojun just...reciprocated his best friend's feelings?! Was Suho hallucinating or?
"...Seriously?"
Seojun nodded softly, "I'm serious, Suho. If anything, I've been wanting to kiss you since...since middle school."
Suho felt the world stop once his best friend spoke again. Seojun has wanted to kiss Suho since they met? Since they first saw each other? Since they first shared each other's lunch? Since...the start of basically everything? Whiplash was mentally hitting Suho because he couldn't truly believe it.
"Ever since?"
"Ever since."
Slowly, Seojun enveloped Suho in his arms and gave him a hug. The feeling overwhelmed Suho at first since he was still mentally registering everything. Then, Seojun pulled his head back slightly before leaning forward to make their lips gently meet.
