I banged my foot against the chair. The detention monitor gave me a stern look, and I looked back down to my desk. Small doodles of flowers and hearts were etched into the hardwood. I traced my fingers over them, noticing a scribble under the edge. I pushed my chair back and looked under. W+E=we!! My heart picked up its beat. Why does this always happen to me? My head spun, and then the memory came rushing back.
I giggled as Elise laced her fingers through mine. 'It's okay Elise, it's just detention! All you have to do is sit and be bored.' She looked at me and smiled. 'Yeah, I know, but it's my first time, and it's kinda scary. I mean this is what they give us for catching us kissing in the corridor? pathetic!'
I gave her a look, and she chuckled. 'Okay, okay. I got it. It makes it better that I'm here with you, though.'
I grinned. ' of course it does, I'm amazing'
'You are'
I stared at her pink lips, fighting the urge to kiss them. She raised her eyebrows and pulled her chair closer to mine. She leaned into my ear and whispered; 'We have all day ahead of us. How about we do something fun later on?'
I smirked. 'Fun? Like what?'
She winked. 'I'll leave that to your imagination.'
Laughing, I picked up a pen. Getting on my knees, I looked at the hardwood of the table above me. Elise looked at me curiously, and I smiled to myself. W+E=we!! I wrote under the desk. She stared at it for a long time, then burst out laughing. 'I love it! That's it, our ship name is officially WE.'
I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear and smiled shyly.
'It will never go, you know. Just like us, it will always be there. forever.'
She took my hands. 'It's perfect, wren. Like you.'
A tear fell onto the ground. My shoulders shook as I stared at the writing under the desk. I rubbed my eyes, desperately trying to get the tears to stop, to go away, but to no avail. I grabbed a piece of paper and started scrubbing hard on the writing. A bit of the letter E smudged, but wouldn't come off. I grunted and scrubbed harder. No matter how hard I tried, it wouldn't go. Now it reads W+=we!!.
It's gone, just how she is.
I thought you left!
I wouldn't leave you
It was nicer without you.
It shouldn't be nice. You don't deserve nice.
Yeah, like you keep reminding me.
You need the reminder.
I got off the floor and plopped back into my chair. Sighing, I put my head in my hands. I looked up and flinched. The detention monitor was standing right in front of me, glaring. 'What. are. You. doing?'
I stammered; 'nothing. My pencil fell..'
She gave me a death stare, then stalked back to the front of the class.
'She's a bit scary innit?' a voice sounded from behind me.
I whirled around, only to see a boy with white-blonde hair staring right at me. 'Hi, I'm Jules.' he said, giving me a slight smile.
I blinked a few times, then replied; 'Hey. I'm Wren.'
He leaned back in his chair and folded his hands.
'Wren. I like that name.'
My mouth started pulling up, threatening to smile, but I coughed, and it disappeared. No niceness.
'Thank you.' I said curtly and turned back to my desk.
Silence for a moment. And then; 'Your not a very social person, are you?' He leaned forward, a wicked gleam in his black eyes.
'Why did you run away when Lana was trying to help you after you fainted?'
I turned around. 'What's it to you?'
He smiled. 'Just asking.'
'Well then stop asking.'
He chuckled and leaned closer. 'You can tell me, Wren. I can tell your not like the other people. You're different. More mysterious. I like that. Now the question is, why? What happened to make you like this?
An accident? A fight, with a friend perhaps?' He looked straight into my eyes. 'A death?'
I banged my fist on the desk and stood up. The detention monitor opened her mouth, ready to tell me to get the hell down, but I turned my heel and walked straight out of the door. I could almost imagine Jules's satisfied smile burning into my head.
He knows. You have to get rid of him.
How would he know, first of all?
You never know the capabilities of this generation. They can find things with just a click of a button. It's not safe. You are not safe, with him around.
Then what do I have to do?
You know. You've done it before...
I'm NOT doing that again. Never in my life.
I'm leaving the decision to you. Make it quick. And be smart about this, Wren. we can't afford anyone to know.
Okay.
