I walked down the corridor, my head up for once. I looked through the crowd of people walking past me for one specific person. One with white hair, and a devious smile. Jules's words played through my brain. You're different. More mysterious. What happened to make you like this? A death?
My teeth gritted. How does he know? I covered my tracks so well, it would be impossible for anyone to know.
He has to go.
For once, I agree.
I shoved through a group of giggly blondes, ignoring them as they shot me dirty looks. One of them stepped right in front of me. She smirked and flipped her ponytail in my face. 'What's with you? Can't you see we were here? Did mommy not teach you any manners?'
Her group of girls giggled. I rolled my eyes. We don't have time for this.
Fine.
I kept my head down and tried to pass her, but she pushed me back. 'You're not leaving now that you've done that! Apologise. Then maybe I'll consider letting you go.'
I looked her up and down. Blonde, perfectly glossed lips, and minuscule crop tops that barely covered anything. Probably a cheerleader too. I knew her type. All they wanted was attention and drama. I could take her, easy.
She lifted a brow. 'Well? Cat got your tongue?' I took a deep breath, and slapped her. A hush went down in the corridor. She stood there, half frozen, with a hand on her now red cheek. She slowly got up and looked straight at me. 'You're going to regret that.' she said, still holding her cheek.
With a scream, she rushed at me and kicked me straight in the ribs with her platform heels. I crumpled to a heap on the floor, and her group of girls cheered. The pain was a blinding flash, causing me to cry out in pain. She kicked me again, this time in my thigh. I stifled a scream, and bent over. Why are you so weak? You started it! Fight back!
I tried to get up, but couldn't. She leaned down to me. 'Try harder next time, bitch.' she smiled, then walked away, leaving me on the cold, hard floor. I lay there, clutching my stomach as the pain heightened.
Black Nike sneakers appeared in front of me. A pale hand reached down. I looked up, and straight into Jules's eyes. He gave me a half smile. I grimaced, but held his hand. He pulled me up and I nearly fell back down, the pain piercing through my ribs.
'We gotta get you to the nurse, Astor.' he whispered in my ear. I nodded.
WREN. It's him. Find a way to be alone with him, and then strike.
How do I get him to go somewhere alone with me?
Just seduce him or something. You'll find a way.
Okay...
I held onto his arm as he guided me to the Nurse's office. I looked at him. He had a curious expression on his face, like he had just heard something strange. 'What's wrong?' I asked, lowering my voice an octave.
He looked at me. 'Nothing, why would you ask?'
I shook my head and we continued walking in silence.
Go for it.
My heart started beating faster. 'You know what, I'm feeling much better. I don't think I need to go to the nurse..' A definite lie, my stomach was dying of pain. He raised his eyebrow.
'Doesn't look like it to me.'
I stammered; 'I think I just need a breath of air. Care to join me?' I tried to smile, but it turned into a wince as he sped up his pace.
'Fine.'
He said and turned towards the doors leading to the garden outside the school. His hand was still clutching my arm as if his life depended on it.
Seduce, Wren.
I rolled my eyes but leaned closer to him. He looked down at me and chuckled. 'What?' I asked. He shook his head and led us to a bench in the garden, then gestured for me to sit down, letting go of my arm. I sat, but he remained standing.
'Why did you get into a bitch fight with Madeline?' he asked, looking straight at me. So that was her name.
'Why, do you know her?' I replied. He rolled his eyes and sighed.
'No, not exactly. Just answer my question.'
You're going off track. Get to the point.
How am I even supposed to do this?
You've done it before, it's easy. First, ask him how he knows, then get rid of him. Okay?
I'm sure it's not that easy.
It is. Just do it!
Do what? A deep voice sounded in my head. I whipped my head up, and Jules was staring right into my eyes. I said, do what? His mouth wasn't moving, but I could clearly hear him. He moved closer to me.
Can you- Can you hear me?
Yes.
What. the. Fuck.
My thoughts exactly.
Can you hear...It?
Yeah, but it can't hear me.
So you just heard everything we just talked about.
Yep.
Fuuuuuuckkkkk..
'We can talk in real life as well, you know. Not just in your head.' He said.
He plopped down beside me.
'You wanna know how I know, right? I mean, how I can hear your It, and how I know about...Elise.'
I rubbed my eyes. What was going on? 'Yeah.' I whispered. He propped his elbows on the bench and looked up into the sky.
'Elise wasn't only yours, you know. She had other people as well.
I thought she told you about me, she even said we were going to meet. That was before she died.' He brought out his hand.
'Let me formally introduce myself. Hi, Wren. I'm Jules Wayward.'
A deep sense of foreboding washed upon me.
He leaned in closer and whispered in my ear. 'Elise's stepbrother.'
HI. In case you didn't understand, when the word It is being used with capital, they are referring to the voices in their heads. Except, for Wren and Jules, the voices are something....darker. more alive.
Jules's head voice is in bold
Wren's is normal.
