The crunch of dead leaves under the soles of my feet were loud and clear as I walk deeper into the darkness of the woods.

It was starting to get to me how quiet and still the eerie blackness of this land was. I was alternating between walking and standing still to hear and smell my surroundings.

This doesn't make sense. I'm sure there is something around here.

'At this rate we won't find anything Eli. Let me do the searching.' Enzo, my alpha wolf was getting impatient, like always.

"I am not shifting unless there is something dangerous around here Enzo." I quietly say as I look around the darkness that surrounded me.

Damn. I really can't see shit around here. I may be a werewolf with enhanced eyesight but the fact that I can't see anything puts me on edge.

'Elijah. We've been walking around for more than 15 minutes already.' I could practically feel Enzo pacing back and forth. His eagerness was starting to annoy me.

"Enzo will you shut the hell up!" I growl in a warning tone, and Enzo returns it.

'Hurry up and let me take over to get this done with! Unlike you, I hate leaving my mate unattended!' I let out a frustrated sigh.

"Do you or do you not want Lucien to be safe? We're out here to protect him from whatever is roaming around." My eyebrows scrunched together as I walked a little faster through the quiet forest.

"I hate leaving Lucien alone too Enzo, but may I remind you that I can't be seen running around naked in the middle of the woods." Like hell I'll be seen running around butt naked just because Enzo wants to stretch his legs. No. I rather stay here searching for 5 more hours by feet.

'Humans and their modesty.' Enzo rolls his eyes at that.

"Just shut up and help me scout the area will you?" I step over a fallen tree, my eyes scanning the darkness for anything unusual.

'I'm telling you Elijah, if you'd let me out this would be way easier—' The sound of a snapping twig makes me stop in my tracks. I quickly turn my head towards the sound and attempt to pinpoint where it came from.

My eyes weren't really much help, so I sniffed the air to see what I could muster. Nothing but wet soil and wild pine trees filled my nose.

'Did you hear that?' Enzo asked quietly, and I lowered myself to the ground. I squint my eyes in a desperate manner, cursing my sight at the moment for making me feel useless.

There was a small rustling of leaves, it wasn't noticeable unless you were really attentive. I stay in a crouching position, watching and waiting for another sound to strike.

I could hear my own heartbeat starting to pick up its pace as adrenaline kicked in my system. My ears twitched when I heard more rustling about ten feet away from me.

I stalked through, making sure I didn't make any noise. I sniff the air once again, advancing slowly and steadily towards what looked like a large log.

I walk around it, alert and ready for anything that could possibly jump on me.

I inhale sharply, only to find a large snake buried under some leaves. I release a sigh, stopping a few feet away from it.

"Fuck, false alarm. It's just a damn snake." I say as I watch it slither away underneath the log with a hiss. I brushed a hand through my hair, getting a bit discouraged.

'Are we done with our hiking trip yet?' Enzo asked sarcastically. I roll my eyes, ignoring him as I continue to walk around.

I let my nose guide me this time, making my way through a path that was heavy with trees and wild bushes. I walked further, noticing that I was getting closer to what seemed to be a large pond.

The smell of wet moss and the sounds of frogs and insects were now noticeable as I closed in on it. The dark waters gave off the reflection of the moon above me along with the surrounding pine trees.

I come to a halt, inspecting everything very closely. Nothing looked out of the ordinary which was in a way very pleasing.

'Can we head back now?' Enzo suggests with a bored tone. I tune him out, glancing down at my blurry outline along the pond waters.

All this walking and searching is making me doubt myself. Maybe I was wrong and there really isn't anything hiding here. I was so sure...I heard something walking around the woods.

Maybe it was just my imagination...

'Hey Eli...do flowers normally glow in the dark like that?' I raise a brow at the silly comment.

"What are you talking about Enzo..." I turn around, my eyes immediately finding a batch of glowing yellow buttercups.

They were admitting a subtle dull glow, but enough to make them stand out in the darkness of the forest.

I walk closer to it out of curiosity, careful no to touch them in case they were laced with menacing energy. I stare at the buttercups and their soft yellow petals.

Upon further inspection, this plant looked like they were reacting to some sort of magical energy. It was strange. I was no flower expert but my senses told me whatever they were reacting to, it was close. Very close.

'Look Elijah, there's more over there.' Enzo points out, making me look up from the buttercups.

Enzo was right. There were more batches of buttercups and other plants that glowed dimly in the darkness of the forest. They were scattered, but it almost seemed like it formed some sort of trail.

I stand there, debating if I should turn back now, or look for the source of energy these plants were responding to.

'It's your call Elijah.' Enzo says. I hum, as I make up my mind.

"Let's see where they take us. Be prepared Enzo...this is definitely not normal." I warn Enzo as I follow the glowing flowers with caution.

The yellow buttercups were mixed with dandelions and other pretty looking wild flowers that I didn't know the name of.

I made sure not to touch them even though they were most likely harmless, but better safe than sorry.

I noticed that as I followed them deeper into the forest, the flowers seemed to glow more and more brighter.

'We must be getting closer.' Enzo also noticed it as I make my way around fallen tree branches and bushes.

I slowly come to a stop as my eyes land upon something that took my breath away.

'Damn. That's one big ass tree.' Enzo said exactly what I was thinking as I stared at this big, thick, and burly oak tree.

The tree trun was enormous, covered in light green moss and its branches stretched outwards and up in various directions. Some of the roots were poking out and coiled themselves over and under the soil.

Lots of leaves, moss and dirt surrounded it, and the tree itself glows softly.

The tree looked like one of those trees you would find in fairytale stories.

'Shall we?' Enzo says, curious and excited to explore this abnormal tree.

"Yes we shall." I say as I took a step closer to this mysterious glowing oak tree.
