It was a dark windy night.

With the moon as our light, we sprint hand in hand.

They were after us. Big large beasts.

Our harsh breathing mixed together as we flee blindly through the dark jungle of Tikal.

"Faster Nicte! We must run faster!"

My mother yelled desperately, pulling me firmly by my wrist so that I wouldn't fall behind.

"Na' wait—" Was all I could say as I dared to glance back at the beast.

Vicious snarls and glowing red eyes appeared in the dark jungle. There were more then one pair or murderous eyes trialing us, moving closer.

"Mom!" I wail, my heart pondering against my rib cage. My legs hurt from running and I struggled to keep my breathing.

'I'm scared. I'm scared.'

"Don't look Nicte! Don't look!"
Ma urged me as she hastily changed direction. Her nails dug into my skin without intent, but I was to frighten to even feel it.

The moonlight reflected off her teal green orbs, and her wet cheeks glistened in the darkness.

The beads and feathers that adorned her long black hair were tangled and missing along with smeared markings that were painted on her body and face.

My eyes stung with tears making my vision become blurry.

'I'm scared. I'm so scared.'

We suddenly come to a stop at the edge of a steep sloped cliff. The sound of water was faint but the glistening and reflection of the moon told us there was a steady body of water beneath us.

"My Gods, why have you left me!"
My mother cries as she backed away from the cliff and looked helplessly right and left.

"Na' I'm scared." I tell her as I reach for her. The trees around us swayed to the rhythm of the cold wind that blew.

Ma turned to look at me with a guilty face. "Nicte, forgive me. I have done the unspeakable."

I looked at her trembling lips in confusion. "Na' what are you saying—"

"Promise me you will stay hidden. Promise me!"

"Na'—"
I shook my head, confused and scared to the core.

"My dear boy. My sweet child." My mother touched the slopes of my cheeks and pressed her forehead against mine.

"You must stay safe. The forest will guide you. Mom loves you very much."

Heavy steps pounded slowly against the soil, and a low growl sounded dangerously close. Mother had brought me into a trembling tight embrace.

"Akna, dear mother of mother's I dare to beg, shield my precious boy from harms way, he has done nothing wrong. Oh mighty lord Yum Kaax of our jungle, please protect and guide my flower, it is you whom I leave my dearest boy in your hands."

My mother prayed to our gods with a broken voice. Tears dripped down her round soft chin. I couldn't understand why she was doing such things. I stood there frozen and unable to return her desperate embrace.

From the corner of my eye, I saw a black shadow of a big murderous creature that made my blood run cold.

"N-Na'." I uttered so quietly I barely heard my own voice. It's piercing blood red orbs stared at me with malicious intent.
