08 | New Step

We landed near a small hotel. His parents too came. Everyone went inside and had our lunch. It was a normal hotel.

Rajan sat beside me while eating. It strangely felt good to sit beside a man and eat who happened to  be my husband.

After finishing our lunch, he informed his parents about leaving to work. My mother in law asked him to come home along with me as this is the first time, we are both gonna enter his house as married couple.

Sighing, he agreed to it. I thought we are going to again in bike. But looks like his house is near to the hotel. Everyone started walking. He came near me.

"Come" he said and I too followed him. Crossing 4 houses from the hotel, everyone stopped. It was a small individual house.

By the look of it I assumed that it has been built long time back. It had the olden day design for the house.

We stood together at the entrance of the house as directed by his mom. Sunita, his sister went inside and brought the aarthi plate. Rajan was seen waiting impatiently , hurrying up his mother. 

I guess he took permission from his office and not a whole day leave like me. His mother took the aarthi and we stepped inside the house with right leg. 

I was asked to light the lamp in the small pooja room present inside the kitchen. "maa can I leave, its getting late for me" Rajan spoke. 

"wait da.. Can't you just wait for few minutes? let her light the lamp. Stand near her and pray to God"

He reluctantly agreed to it and stood beside me. I scratched the match box with the stick inducing the fire.

Lighting the lamp with it I prayed to God, hoping only good things happen from now on. 

When I opened my eyes, Rajan was seem to be in a hurry to leave the place impatiently for work. "Apply the vermilion on her forehead da" directed his mom. 

I could feel him in running out of time for his work. But my mother in law asking him to do all the rituals.

While I was looking at my in law, thinking all this, he brought a pinch of vermilion on his fingers and applied it on my head partition. 

He looked at me and I too looked when he applied it . He did not have any emotion displayed in his face.

His mind was full on leaving for work. His fingers rested only for very few seconds and then it was gone. 

Rajan left the house stating he is leaving to work, in general not specific to anyone. Once he left, I was guided to one of the room which had a cot.

That room does not seem to be his room as it had most of girl items, Probably Sunita's. 

I don't know what to do or what to talk with them. I just sat on the cot observing my surroundings.

What felt like only few minutes, I woke up to see that I got in to a deep slumber and was asleep on the bed.

I woke up to see the time it was evening. Finding the bathroom, I refreshed myself and came out. His mother Jayanthi, greeted me with a smile. 

"Do you want Coffee or tea maa?" she asked in a sweet way. 

"Coffee is enough" 

She nodded her head and went to the kitchen. She seemed to be a very old lady with the grey hairs, lean figure due to the age. She walked slowly with tiredness due to her old age problems. 

I too strode towards the kitchen and offered to help her out in preparing the coffee for everyone. 

The evening just like that passed away with small talks with my in-laws and Sunita.

She seemed to be pretty nice girl who helped me out in stuffing things. I came to know that her marriage is fixed. My inlaws too seemed to be good so far.

Now I remembered why he asked for jewels. But I did not say anything about it to her.

I changed to a chudidhar given by Sunita. As we both are kind of same in size I did not have any problem with fitting.

We all had dinner prepared by my inlaw and I helped her in preapring the same. The whole day no one spoke or cared to ask about my parents or anything else.

In stead the talks were in general . I found it pleasing to stay with them in this just half day.

Rajan came home late at night with tiered look. His mom served him food while I was asked to spend time with Sunita.

I heard voice of Rajan denying some request made by his mom. I  am not able to conclude what it is fully as their voice was feeble.

After some time, I was given the milk in a tumbler and was sent to my room by my inlaw. 

Oh.. How could I forget this. I know its my first night staying in this house with him. But the real  first night thing did not strike me well. Nor I should say , was in a position to have any dreams about it.

I entered our room and locked the door. The room was not decorated, but had some fruits present in the side table.

This is the first time I am seeing him wear dhoti and shirt. A normal cotton white dhoti and shirt. 

I too was asked to wear a saree given by inlaw. But I chose to wear the same saree and blouse that I wore today morning.

I was contemplating and fidgeting with the tumbler in my hand on what to do next. "I am feeling very tired, is it ok if I sleep now?" he asked.

"hmmm" I hummed in response not knowing what to say.

As if he was waiting for my answer, he layed himself on the bed and closed his eyes. I drank the milk all by myself, as I like to drink it hot before it gets cold.

Placing the tumbler on the stand , I took the other side of the bed and started sleeping.

I know definitely he will not be ready to start with our married life now. Neither do I. There is plenty of time for us to discuss, get to know each other and then go on with the married life. 

With that thought I slept. Probably a good thing that has happened today without hearing any bad news in my life.
