Alex POV

A sharp sting lingered on my cheek as I stormed out of that dismal building and into the refuge of my car. Rubbing the tender spot, I slammed the car door shut. "Well, that was a real shit show." Never in my life had I been slapped. No matter how attractive someone might be, anger issues are an instant turn-off though I could see myself making an exception for her.

A forceful knocking on my window jolted me from my thoughts. Glancing away from my lap, I'm met with Devyn standing there, wearing an expression that was both annoyed and defeated. She's about to chew me out. Bracing myself for the impending lecture, I rolled the window down.

"What's up, Devy?" I greeted her with feigned innocence.

"Save it, asshat. What the hell happened to leaving your attitude at home?" Devyn cut straight to the point.

"Technically, you said to leave my attitude in the car—"

"Technically, I can totally kick your ass right now," her tone shifted from annoyance to anger.

"Okay, okay, you're right." I held my hands up in surrender, acknowledging her point.

"I know I had a bit of an attitude—" I started, but Devyn's narrowed eyes stopped me.

"It wasn't a bit of attitude. You were being a complete dick in there. You took it too far, and you know it." Agitation practically oozed from her.

"No, what I know is how hard you worked in college to be able to help out an old friend back home. What I know is that we came here today to do a good deed. I also know for a fact that she was acting like an ungrateful baby in there. Do you want me to continue?" Devyn took a moment before responding.

"You don't know her, Lex. You know nothing about that girl. Her story, where she's come from, nor walked through. She isn't just some regular client to me, alright? I abandoned her when she needed me the most... and this is my way of attempting to make things right with us. So please, Alex, don't mess this up for me," her words came as a pleading symphony.

"Whatever, Devyn. Just don't come crying to me when she slaps the taste out of your mouth too," I groaned while rubbing my cheek, replaying the incident in my mind.

A series of chuckles escaped from Devyn's mouth as she leaned on my car door. "I told you to leave your attitude in the car," she said between laughs.

"Ha ha, very funny. I'd love to see you take it the way I did." I turned the corner of my mouth up, offering her a smirk.

"That's what she said!" Devyn's voice boomed, and the sound of her cackling echoed throughout my car.

The smirk immediately fell from my face as I deadpanned. I really can't stand this woman.
