Aminah POV
Flashback 1 month before Hailee's Death
"What would you do if I wasn't here anymore?"
Her words caught me off guard, and my mood instantly shifted. 'What is it now?' I placed the last of our new dishware in the kitchen cabinet and turned to face her. Hailee stood there, a messy bun perched lazily atop her head, one of my oversized painting shirts hanging loosely around her shoulders, paired with her usual boxers. We'd spent what felt like hours unpacking, trying to turn this place into a home, and Hailee has been, well— Hailee.
"Huh?" I question, raising my brows in confusion at another one of my love's many riddles. You'd think that I'd be used to this game by now, 'figure out what's going on inside of Hailee Stone's mind before she blows.' Quite the twisted game my love makes me play.
She sighed taking a few cautious steps toward the kitchen island, putting her weight against it. With ease she slid off her black moving gloves and laid her hands on the wooden surface. "Like, if I wasn't around? Would you be okay?" She questioned, her amber eyes meeting mine with an intensity I wasn't quite prepared for at 9 am.
"Love, are okay? If you need a break you can go grab us some breakfast— I'm feeling bagels. How about you?" I replied, not wanting to feed into her mental games.
"Little one I'm serious." She expressed in a whisper, her eyes pleading for me to answer.
"Hailee why are you even asking me this? Are you leaving me? Is that what this is?"
Leaning onto her elbows she placed her head in her hands in frustration. "Damn it love. Why the hell would I leave you?"
"Exactly. So why are we having this conversation?" I counter, annoyance clear in my tone. 'God she is so confusing.'
"I meant if I was dead Aminah."
Her words hung in the air, turning the warmth of the kitchen cold. My breath hitched, and I felt a sharp pang in my chest, the kind that happens when the ground beneath you shifts unexpectedly.
"What?" My voice barely managed to escape, laced with a mix of disbelief and fear.
She lifted her head from her hands, her gaze softening, but there was something else there too—something dark, almost resigned. "I'm just saying... if something happened to me, would you be okay? Would you be able to go on?"
"Hailee, don't talk like that," I whispered, the gravity of her words beginning to sink in. "Why would you even think about something like that? Are you sick? Is there something you're not telling me?"
