Aminah's POVI wonder if hell has a looking glass, and if so was she there watching? Front and center with clammy hands and desperation to shatter the glass, or viewing from the shadows with a scorching soul vying for the heart she no longer controlled. A witness to the newcomer exploring the very waters she once sailed effortlessly.
Tell me Hailee, are you now beginning to feel the pain that I feel?
Devyn's arm lay draped across my chest as she snores peacefully in her sleep, her head comfortably resting on the plush green pillow beneath her. Raven tresses cover parts of her face, a soft look of content peaking from behind the loosely scattered strands. There was a time I used to envy her ability to look so beautiful in her sleep, carefree.
Now, I'd say it's less envy and more alarming.I stare at the ceiling, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts. Her presence, once comforting, now feels like a chain tethering me to a past I'm desperate to escape.
I carefully lift her arm, sliding out of bed and sitting on the edge, my back to her. The room is dimly lit by the early morning sun seeping through the curtains, casting long shadows that dance across the floor. I rub my eyes, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep, but the memory of last night lingers.I touch my lips ever so slightly. That kiss should have felt wrong, but it didn't. Though, I wasn't left squirming from butterflies either. It felt, like a taste of control. That kiss, it ignited something dark within me. A fierce, almost intoxicating power. In a matter of seconds I had unraveled Devyn from her twisted chains of hidden desire leaving her melting from my words and presence alone.
Euphoric it was. But it changes nothing between Devyn and I. A kiss is simply that, a kiss.
Coming from her, it was an excuse.
I feel her stir behind me, her sleepy murmur breaking the silence. She's waking up. I can feel her eyes on my back, the weight of her gaze heavy with unspoken questions. I tense as she sits up, the bed creaking softly beneath her.
"Morning," she says, her voice husky with sleep. There's a softness to her tone, a warmth that spoke for the words unsaid.
I don't respond, my silence thick with unresolved tension. She moves closer, her hand gently caressing my cheek, a tender gesture meant to soothe. But it only reminds me of the countless times she wasn't there when I needed her most.
"Minah," she whispers, her breath warm against my skin. "Last night..."
I pull away, turning to face her with a hard stare. "Last night changes nothing, Devyn."
