Aminah's POV:
Flashback 5 Years Ago - Spring Break

"Stupid fucking banner." My fingers struggle with untangling Devy and Hailee's 'welcome home' sign.

The 2 were due to be back home at any moment. Devyn's parents had left for the airport a little over an hour ago and they planned to make a stop for Mr. Stones daily scratch offs. A routine ritual of his. It was finally spring break, and my girls are finally coming home.

I wanted their welcome home party to be perfect. Well as close to perfect as I could possibly get. I'd set up balloons, ordered a cake, and I even cooked dinner... Not exactly a five star Michelin meal, but it would do.

Pasta heals the soul.

The sound of my phone vibrating lulled me from my thoughts.

Incoming text notification: Dev's Mom Da Bomb

'We'll be home in about 3 minutes. Send message to Aminah Bo Binah .'

I laugh softly at her message. Devyn's mom definitely has her own special way with technology. Shaking my head I place my phone in my pocket and do a quick scan of the room.

Orange and forest green balloons lay scattered around while the welcome home banner hung crookedly on the living room wall. In the corner layed 2 wrapped canvases. I'd spent the whole semester painting them. An art project turned into gift inspiration, I called it the home series and I planned on gifting it to them during dessert.

It'd been so long since we all were able to hang out together. Hailee was always too busy while Devyn always had assignments and exams to study for. Not that I didn't understand flying back and forth from Washington to California was a bit difficult to do on a regular basis. I just wish it didn't feel like the memory of me is fading away in their minds.

Hailee forgets to call and Devyn avoids me like the plague.

The sound of a car pulling into the driveway breaks me away from my thought , and I immediately break into a wide smile.

'My girls are home.'

Adjusting my clothes I rush to turn off the lights, and grab a confetti popper. My heart beats eagerly as the anticipation builds hearing the slamming of car doors.

'This week will fix everything.'

The sound of keys jingling in the lock echoed in the living room. The front door swings open and in walks Devyn's parents followed by an anxious looking Devyn. Her raven hair was pulled into her signature faux messy half up - half down. Her waves looked velvety and healthy as they cascaded past her shoulders, it'd gotten longer too.
