Later at night, Ali and Carter, both running late, took their seats. Someone inquired, "Why are you late again? On a date, probably?" Carter, adjusting his tie, replied, "That's one valid reason."
Ali, nonchalantly adjusting her bag, added, "Yeah, sure." She stood up and walked away from him. Carter, looking at her, questioned, "Where are you going?" Ali replied, "Home," and Carter offered, "Let me walk you home." Ali, without much protest, said, "That's the least you can do."
Later that night, breaking the silence, Ali thanked Carter for walking her home. He smiled and replied, "It's the least I can do." Their hands were close, and Carter playfully touched her hand. Ali noticed but simply smiled. Carter said, "I'll see you tomorrow." Ali, with a hint of sarcasm, remarked, "Hopefully not." Carter grinned and added, "What about our side project?" winking at her. Ali smiled again, and Carter said, "Bye. I'll be here tomorrow at 5 pm." As Ali went inside, Carter lingered, rubbing his face, lost in contemplation, and eventually walked away, his thoughts echoing in the night.
