PART 37 BRETTONIO

(Ava and Connor soon arrive, having come to share the news about Julie. Meanwhile, Sylvie returns to the waiting room. She can tell from her expressions that Julie did not survive the operation...)

Sylvie: (scared) Ava, Connor, what happened?

Ava: (with a heavy heart) Sylvie, I don't have good news. Julie...

Sylvie: (looks at Ava and Connor dumbly and scared) What happened to Julie?

Connor: The surgery was extremely challenging, despite the best efforts of the doctors...

(Sylvie exists, lost in the moment, and the words seem to be lost in the air. Her face reflects immense sadness and pain at the loss of her daughter.)

Ava: The operation was not successful. Julie did not survive.

Sylvie: (quietly, almost whispering) No... I can't believe it...

Ava: (sympathetically) Sylvie, we're here for you. This is an incomprehensibly difficult moment.

Connor: (gently) Julie was a strong girl. She knew you loved her.

Jake: What happened?

Sylvie: Jake... Julie is gone. She left.

Jake: (shocked) What are you saying?

Sylvie: (sheds tears and barely says the words) The operation was unsuccessful. Julie left us.

Jake: (horrified) No... It can't be true.

(Jake stops as he realizes the terrible truth. Sylvie looks at him with tears in her eyes, both parents now sharing the same grief and loss. Around them the waiting room is filled with silence, broken only by the sounds of Sylvie and Jake.

Jake (suddenly serious): "It's your fault!"

Sylvie: "How dare you say that?! I'm not the one who shot!"

Jake: "So what! You're a life saver! You should be taking care of her, not letting her die!!"

Sylvie: (with fury) How dare you blame me?! Julie did not die for lack of care or love! I was there, trying to do everything I could.

Jake: (angry) You don't get it? You were in the right place to solve the situation! And now... now she's gone.

Sylvie: Yes, I can save people's lives! But I don't have a license to operate!

Jake: (sarcastically) Oh, great! You really proved to be a great police officer and mother!

Sylvie: (with teary eyes) I... it's not my fault, Jake! You can't put all the blame on me.

Jake: (bitterly) I could have done something different. Better. Maybe you should die for her too!
