The Sapphire Dragon

Part 23

He leans down and is about to cut my neck with the knife in his hand when someone grabs him from behind, pulling him off me. After a second I see the guy fall to the ground. I look up at the person who saved me and find that it's Ezra.

Before I can say anything, he is turned away fighting another guy. I manage to get to my feet and am about to help him with the guy he is fighting when another rushes at me. I try to sidestep his advance but end up falling from the trap being all tangled. His fist connects with my ribs and I curl into myself in pain and close my eyes. A second later I open my eyes to find Ezra standing over me with the guy against his chest throat slashed.

He lets the guy fall and crouches down beside me. He asks "Are you ok?"

Confused, I ask,"How'd you get here? How did you find me?"

He replies, "I watched you fly off and I felt that something bad was going to happen so I followed you. Then I heard you cry out and I knew something happened. After that I followed the scent of blood and found my way here. Now, we need to get you back to the cave, you're hurt."

He tries to help me up but I fall back crying out in pain as the trap digs into my ankle. Ezra gently examines the bear trap and after a second says "I'm going to have to take this off, ok? This is going to hurt a lot but I can't untangle it." 

I nod and try to brace myself for the pain. After a second he pulls the bear trap's teeth apart and I barely manage not to flinch away. Ezra pulls it off and then says "Ok, now we need to get you back to the cave. I've got some medicine there. Can you fly?"

He helps me to my feet and I say "No, they cut my wing. I won't be able to fly for a bit if ever."

Ezra sighs and says "Ok, give me a second. Can I borrow the necklace so that when I change back I still have my clothes?"

Confused, I take it off and hand it to him. Ezra puts it on and crouches down. He says "Stay back for a second. I'm going to change into my wolf form."

I hobble backwards and wait. Suddenly a blinding light emits from Ezra's body and I close my eyes. After a few seconds I open them to see a huge wolf standing in front of me.

He crouches down and says "Get on. It'll be faster this way. Make sure to hold on tight." I swing on and grab onto his fur as he stands back up. He then takes off at a run.
