It's true. Hiccup has been kidnapped. Unfortunately, this is not a nightmare from which he can wake up in a cold sweat. He clutched his pounding skull and observed the surroundings suspiciously. He raised his hands and tried to locate any injuries. Heavy chains rubbed against his wrists. He had probably fainted and the soft creaking of the planks and the gentle rocking of his cell told him that he must be on a ship. He sighed. If his younger, more innocent self had known the mess he would get into as soon as he heard the word dragon vanquisher whispered on the wind, he would have thought twice about flying away from the rough, cold rock of his home island Berk.Exhausted, he leaned against the damp wooden wall of his cell. Hiccup could only imagine what might be in store for him.Viggo Grimborn was a thinker, a gambler, a strategist. He loved the game and all the tricks that life had to offer. Accordingly, he spared no effort. Now he not only had the Dragon's Eye, but also him, Hiccup, in his rough, violent hands.Hiccup was aware of his situation. Viggo would take great pleasure in driving him mad, Hiccup was sure of that. He didn't want to imagine the cruelty that was to come, so he patiently looked at the grain of the old wood. Finally, on closer inspection, he discovered a wooden knob that was barely visible protruding a crack from the floor. A wonderful discovery, because no matter what the knob was to be used for, he would use it when the time came. A glimmer of hope sprouted in him. He would see Toothless again, he would see his team again and, above all, he would see Astrid.
Oh, Astrid, he murmured.
Voices came muffled from upstairs. They grew louder as they moved towards Hiccup. He tried to stand up and succeeded, albeit shakily and not nearly as gracefully as he was used to with his body, despite his prosthesis. A sharp pain shot through his head and he concentrated stubbornly on the knob, repressing the thought that pressing it could also trigger traps in his cell. He fumbled for his dagger, which he had hidden under his bracer. He breathed a sigh of relief when he found it safely stowed in its holder.
