Coriolanus Snow was stunned and he walked into the hall to take a breather. "I know that you are hiding how poor you are."

Coriolanus whipped around and ended up face-to-face with Casca Highbottom. "I don't know what you are talking about," Coryo spoke confidently hoping to hide his emotions.

Highbottom said nothing and was quiet for a moment before speaking again. "I know exactly who you are Snow, and I'm going to do whatever it takes to ensure you don't get that prize."

Coriolanus grit his teeth and had trouble keeping his face neutral. Highbottom walked away and as Coryo was heading back to the penthouse, he realized that Soteria Baird was in for a hard time because he was her mentor, making him sick.

************

Coriolanus Snow sat in his room at the penthouse in disbelief as Tigris sat at his desk. He knew that Soteria was not at all likely to trust him and for some reason that made him worried. He couldn't help her win if she didn't trust him and he couldn't win the scholarship if she didn't trust him. He looked at Tigris "this is going to be a disaster. She doesn't trust me."

"I wouldn't trust you either." When Coriolanus looked at her in confusion Tigris sighed "She's been ripped from her home with no one around her. All she needs is for someone to show that they still care about her. She's not going to trust someone that doesn't care."

Coriolanus thought about what Tigris was saying and realized that if he were in the same situation as Soteria he might be feeling completely alone.

The next day, Coriolanus Snow did something unlike the other mentors. He stood at the train station with a white rose in his hands waiting for his tribute to show up. As the train stopped in front of him Coriolanus swallowed knowing that Soteria wouldn't trust him easily and that he needed to make a good first impression.

He watched as all of the tributes got off the train and noticed the black-haired girl Soteria get off the train. She looked around and noticed him "you look like you're not supposed to be here."

She had an accent and he smirked "that's because I'm not. I'm your mentor though."

"A rebel." Soteria Baird chuckled as she took the rose that he handed her. "I like it."

Coriolanus smiled at that "call me Coryo, I hate the name Coriolanus it reminds me of my father."

Soteria nodded and the guards looked at her "time to go."

Soteria started walking to the car when Coryo stopped her with a soft hand on her wrist. "Can I accompany her to where she's staying?" Soteria looked at the blonde from the capital in disbelief but was actually somewhat relieved.

************

Both mentor and tribute got into the train car where all of the other tributes were currently residing. Coriolanus Snow was observing these kids that were being forced into this. He was mostly looking at Soteria who was sitting with her district partner not looking fazed in the slightest.

Suddenly, he was pushed back against the train car "who the hell is this?" The boy then looked back at the others "he's one of the capital boys. Why shouldn't we kill him?"

All four of the teenagers around him which he recognized as the boy from 7, the girl from 7, the girl from 4, and the boy from 4. Coryo felt real fear for only the second time in his life. He had made the decision to come here and greet his tribute.

He had the startling realization that he was relying on her trusting him and deciding that she needed him. He felt powerless not for the first time in his life but he could usually do something to take his power back. This time he needed Soteria to give him his power back.

************

Soteria Baird stared at the blonde teen who was her mentor. She saw the hope in his eyes when he met her on the train station. He saw the hope that she would decide to trust him and let him help her.

She didn't trust him not fully but she also took notice of how he was the only mentor here. He wasn't supposed to be here but he had risked it for her. She watched as he was slammed against the train car by four other tributes. She had a decision to make and only about a minute to make it.

Save her mentor and start to trust him or don't and let him die.

She sighed and got up walking to the others. She took the boy from 4s arm that was holding her mentor to the wall and pulled him off. She quickly placed herself between the four of them and her mentor.

************

Coryo gaped in shock not actually expecting Soteria to step in front of him and defend him from the others. He smiled slightly realizing that he had made the right choice in coming to meet her.

He watched as Soteria glared at the four who had cornered him "he's my mentor. I'll need him for a chance to win the games."

"Do we all get one of these mentors?" It took Coryo a minute to realize that it was Reaper the boy from 11 who had asked.

Coryo nodded from behind Soteria "yes. You all get a mentor. You'll meet them later." He watched amazed as every time Treech or Lamina the two from 7 moved to try to get around her, she adjusted herself to block them.

He was amazed at her tenacity, intelligence, instincts, and reflexes. He also noticed that she was constantly switching her gaze between the four who were the most aggressive right now and at the same time assessing whether the others were going to join.

Coryo reached forward and placed a hand on Soteria's arm not wanting her to get into a fight here. All of the tributes stopped when they felt the car stop and the two from 7 and 4 turned to look at the door.

Soteria took the opportunity and moved her arm causing Coryo's hand to slide down and into hers.  He looked at her as she squeezed his hand but kept her eyes on the four aggressive tributes in case they decided to attack again.

Author's note:

What do you think of Soteria protecting Coryo with her body? What do you think of Soteria and Coryo so far? Do you think because she stepped in front of him that Lamina and Treech are going to be after her for it?
