34: End of the War

[OP: "Trees"--The Oh Hellos] 

The cyclone scythe cut into the top of the flower, and Shoto's fire was drawn into it.

It worked far better than they'd thought--most of the flower's center eye was torn clean off because, as they'd suspected, it was not protected against the non-jutsu based attack at all.

The tree shuddered again.

Gaara didn't wait. He made his sand into a kind of saw and began to hack at the flower's base before it could draw chakra up and regrow.

Shoto pulled Momo up on the ice, and a bomb appeared out of her back. She pulled it out and chucked it into the hole with perfect aim.

"Everyone get down!" she yelled.

Temari jumped onto the ice, and then Gaara made a sand sphere around them all as Shoto slid them farther away.

There was a loud bang as the bomb went off.

When Gaara moved the sand, they saw, to their delight, that the flower head was gone.

"Yes!" Temari jumped up and down like a little girl.

"We did it," Momo gasped in relief.

"Hurry," Shoto said. "We have to keep the stem from regrowing it."

He shot fire, and Gaara moved sand.

Soon Gaara was out of energy, though he got to the ground with his sister.

Meanwhile, down there, Wally had dug up a lot of the tree's roots, which were going deeper into the soil and spreading out.

But it didn't matter; all they needed to do was cut off the stem.

Kankuro used one of his puppets that had blades, and the others all used their blades or their hands, tearing through the roots.

Hinata's lions worked surprisingly well to tear it up with their teeth.

Shine's sword didn't just cut it--it burned it so that the roots shriveled up, which was good. They'd worried that they would try to regrow the stems later.

Camie's machete, with some coaching, did the same.

Wally just fried them with speed and lightning. Dabi used the axe to take out more.

Even though the tree was big, with all of them working together this took far less time than you'd imagine.

Then the top blew up, and soon the others were coming down.

Bakugo, who'd been blowing up the trunk of the tree while the others were attacking the bud, so that it couldn't send tendrils to get them, now started to shoot all down the tree, and Shoto added fire.

Wally added electricity by kicking up static.

Shine sliced through the bottom of it with her sword.

"Die, cursed tree," she commanded it, eyes glowing. "And never bear fruit again."

"Oh, I got that," Camie said.

"Camie, move!" Kankuro grabbed her and yanked her back as the branches started to fall off the tree.

Suddenly the whole tree shuddered and began to shrivel and to crumble into itself.

Then it fell over, thankfully not hitting anyone, and most of the green cocoons sank to the ground with it.

Wally caught some of the higher ones.

The cocoons broke open without anything to hang onto, and people reappeared, but the purple light rinnegan was still in their eyes.
