THE FIRST DAY IN seven wasn't what Evie pictured. It took nearly a full day on the train to get there, and the welcoming wasn't very warm, not that she expected it to be.She knew the districts would be nothing like the capitol, but she had no idea how bad they truly were. Everyone in seven wore working clothes, most tattered and covered in dirt from the hard labor.
Evangeline felt as though she stuck out like a sore thumb in her capitol clothes. She made a mental note to purchase new clothes in district seven as soon as possible, to help blend in.
When she arrived at the transition, it was mostly empty. Evie had been in one of the nicer trains with not very many companions on board. There was a woman standing on the district seven train platform when she arrived.
She was a short and stout woman with dark hair and tan skin, a hardened expression on her face. If Evie had to guess, she probably in her late forties or early fifties. The younger girl tried to smile as best she could when she stood in front of the older woman, "Hello! My name is Evangeline Sweet."
"I know who you are, captiol girl. My name is Laurel and you'll do well to remember it." Laurel was not the kindest woman Evie had met, by far.
"Alright." Evie breathed, eyes wide at the shorter woman.
"Come on, then. You've got a lot to learn."
Evie followed after Laurel with haste, trying to keep up with his quick steps. They arrived at an old truck and Laurel motion for Evie to get in.
With her suitcase in her lap, Evie took the passenger seat as Laurel opened the driver's door and took off without another word.
Evie let her eyes watch the scenery out of her window. The entirety of district seven was surrounded by trees, from pine trees to birch trees to cedar trees. She had never seen this much green in her life.
"Close your mouth, you'll catch flies."
Evie hadn't even realized her mouth was open from the view, so she quickly shut her jaw and looked to Laurel. Laurel's eyes were still on the dirt road, Evie wondered how she could tell Evie was staring outside in wonder.
"Sorry," she mumbled, "I've just never seen so many trees."
Laurel almost scoffed, "You'll get used to it, capitol girl. There's trees for miles."
Evie nodded, unsure if Laurel could see her head movement.
"Where are we going?" Evie quested after a moment of silence.
