Author's POV:

An audible gasp escaped Pin's lips as he froze in shock. The seminar hall erupted in deafening cheers and applause. Pond screamed and threw his arms around a dazed Pin, even as cameras flashed around him. Overwhelmed, Pin felt tears of happiness prick his eyes. Glancing back instinctively, he met Son's conflicted gaze across the distance that separated them.

"Oh my God Pin, I'm so proud of you!!" gushed Pond. "Germany is going to be epic! I'll miss you so much, boy!"

Pin nodded mutely, manages a shaky smile. But his stomach churned with anxiety. Germany would be thousands of miles away from home...away from Son. Would this coveted scholarship only divide them further?

As chaos reigned in the Tanapon's household that evening, Pond's words echoed mockingly in Pin's mind - "Germany is going to be epic!"

'Epic indeed!' Thought Pin wryly, as he stared uncomprehendingly at the towering pile of winter clothes his aunt was dumping on his bed.

Yes, He is in his house right now. Aunts, uncles and over-excited neighbors had been streaming into his house non-stop since the scholarship announcement.

"Pin baby, try this sweater, my friend's cousin lives in Berlin, it gets very cold there!"

"Ḥê lūkchāy k̄hxng c̄hạn, don't forget to pack your favourite fluffy duvets..."

"I have a list of all the thai grocery stores in Munich..."

Pin cringed under the barrage of unsolicited suggestions and packing advice, as everyone babbled loudly in a mix of English and Thai. The pulsing headache building behind his eyes threatened to split his poor skull. He needed to get away, now!

Grabbing a flimsy excuse about getting printouts, Pin fled the chaotic house hurriedly. The blinding neon lights and noisy traffic of Bangkok rushed past him unseeingly as he wandered around in a daze, his mind in turmoil. Pursuing his MBA from a top German university had always been his dream. But right now, leaving everything and everyone he loved behind felt unimaginable.

Unconsciously, his feet took him to their special place - a tiny charges that edged the bustling college grounds. Hidden under the canopy of a leafy oak tree, it was his and Son's refuge, where they had whiled away countless evenings last summer talking about everything under the sun.

Pin smiles wistfully recalling those golden evenings from a happier time - before reality raised its ugly head and things went irreparably wrong. He felt an acute pang, missing Son's smile, his laughter and their endless debates on books, music and whether Thom Yorke was a musical genius or just plain weird! Will we ever get back to that level of friendship and understanding? Can I bear leaving without even a proper goodbye? The thought pierced him like a knife through the ribs.

He didn't register the footsteps behind him, until he felt the bench sink slightly with an added weight. Pin whirled around and found himself drowning in a pair of stormy doe eyes tinged with sadness. His heart stuttered painfully in his chest.

"Hi..." ventured Son tentatively into the loaded silence. "I saw you leaving the campus...just wanted to make sure you are okay?"
