That Night

Marcus and I were on watch duty. After hunting through the early hours of the morning, we emerged from the forest and stepped into the clearing.

Finding Edward and Jacob already arguing. "Whoever it was, he left his stink behind," Jacob said as Marcus and I approached.

"It'll be hard to miss when we cross it again. We'll handle it from here." Jacob sounded calm enough, but of course Edward couldn't leave it alone.

"We don't need you to handle anything," Edward said coldly. "Or anyone." His gaze lingered toward Marcus and me. "I could care less what you need"

Jacob replied. Before Edward could snap back, a certain honey blonde cowboy stepped between them and grabbed Edward's arm.

"Enough, Edward." "We're done here." Edward glared at Jacob. "No. You're done here."

I looked over at Bella, who had been silently watching the entire exchange. When our eyes met, I motioned toward the boys.

She sighed heavily before walking down the stairs. "Stop. I'm tired of this," she said, stepping between them. "From now on, I'm Switzerland, okay?"

I rolled my eyes. "Come on, Marcus. Let's go home." Turning away, I headed back toward the forest.

I could feel someone's eyes following me, but I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

The moment I stepped through the front door, a familiar voice rang out. "Mummy!" A smile instantly spread across my face.

I crouched down just as Peter launched himself into my arms. "Hey, baby," I laughed, kissing the top of his head before lifting him up.

Controlling as ever, Edward insisted that Roman and I accompany Bella and Jacob while the Cullens went hunting.

"So," Jacob said, shoving his hands into his pockets, "whaddaya wanna do today?" Jacob sighed.

"Bike, hike, hang out? Your call. Oh, and we're going to a party tonight." Jacob was still wary of Roman, but thankfully he kept most of his comments to himself.

We spent the day doing painfully slow human activities until it was finally time for the council meeting.

"You sure this is okay?" Bella asked as we walked toward the gathering. "I really hate being a party crasher." I snorted.

"Technically, you're a council meeting crasher." Bella rolled her eyes. "See those three?" I pointed toward the elders.

"The council leaders. Billy Black, Quil's grandpa, and Sue Clearwater. She took Harry's place after he passed away." Bella's eyes widened.
