Fear

Dove used to be afraid of a lot of things. Fear of losing her family, friends, and sometimes her own life. But mostly, she was afraid of losing him.

She knew his job was dangerous, and that he was a dangerous man, but she really had no idea exactly who he was. He's an enigma. A puzzle that still needs solving, but somehow he seemed to make the unknown okay.

Despite that, deep down she's always wondered who the man she fell in love with was?

"Where is he?" Dove asked softly. The young girl was lying across the large persian rug, coloring,  in one of one of the many living rooms in the estate.

Devon had been intensely gazing out the window for the past hour. His mind still stuck on his new found discoveries.

They hadn't seen him in four days, and the girl missed him dearly. He said he'd only be gone for a short while, but to her anytime away from him felt longer than ever.

"Probably hurting innocent p-, uh I mean he's out on business." Devon quickly masked his original thought.

Although it wasn't obvious, he never wanted the girl to learn the truth of who he was. Devon knew the Capo did everything he could to protect the girl's innocence, and keep her out of their world.

There was an ongoing war in the underground, which required his attention and focus for the past few days.

From what Devon heard, it likely won't be letting up any time soon, so his duty was to protect the girl.

He had many enemies, and sooner or later they'd find the Capo's most prized possession.

"Devon...can I call you Dee?" The girl looked up into his eyes pleadingly.

He let out an aggressive, tortured "No," and turned away from the girl gritting his teeth.

"But, why?" He could hear the tremble in her voice. He could tell he, unintentionally, hurt her feelings with his tone.

"Because I said so, now go back to your crayons, kid." He heard the girls sniffles first and then the soft patter of her feet as she ran away.

He let out a deep sigh knowing he messed up. He hated acting this way towards her, but he just couldn't unlock that memory. Truth be told he was afraid of it.

Fifteen years ago, she had asked him the same question. Fifteen years ago, he was a different person. Fifteen years ago, they were happy together.

But of course, how could she remember, they were just kids.

10:50pm Dubai, United Arab Emirates

"She'll love it, sir." The kind jewelry explained to the largely, intimidating man in front of her.

He walked in 10 minutes before the shop's closing time, but the man's guards had already posted themselves in and outside the store.

It was obvious, neither the storekeeper or his employees were going home anytime soon.

Her boss was terrified of speaking with the man, and insisted she take care of the man's needs. He'd asked to see their finest jewelry and was quickly escorted to their private showroom.

He bought everything he thought the girl would love, and, lastly, his eyes had settled on a diamond encrusted promise ring.

It was a recent edition to the shop's most valuable pieces, and was rumored to have once belonged to a certain royal overseas. "That one."

Soon, he'd have his family crest chiseled into it, and then gift it to his precious Doe. It would symbolize his love and commitment to her, as well as a promise for the future.

His guards smirked looking over at the ring. They knew exactly how much he cared for the girl, and felt deeply for the girl as well.

She was a blessing in all their lives, and her kindness and gentleness was known across the organization. She was an angel, and had made their Capo stronger in every way possible.

Before her, he was a cold, sick, and twisted monster, now he's just cold. They truly feared for the day anything were to happen to her.

Woe to anyone within that man's path, no one would be able to escape his wrath. For the last time someone tried to take his Dove away, they named it the day of tears, because they can still hear their enemy's cries.
