The water was cool on Jungkook and Yumi's skin as they waded into the pool.
There was no teasing from Jungkook as Yumi took her time getting in, and once she did, he offered his hand. She took it and let him guide her to the deep end.
It was quiet other than the muted sounds of the party. Yumi was slightly shaken, but her wrist hurt more than anything. Jungkook noticed how her fingers dug into it to alleviate the ache, and without a second thought, his fingers replaced hers.
She hesitated before settling, and the two best friends leaned against the edge of the deep end as the stars twinkled around them.
Yumi was stressing about the phone call to management and to her parents. She wanted nothing more than to make her parents proud of her—to show them she could pay for her college tuition and her monthly rent as they had when they were her age.
She felt humiliated enough when she ran out of food, but what happened with Hooni was so much worse. It was such a damper on her mood, on her evening. She thought his favoritism in her would stay within the walls of the coffee shop, get her the raise and extra break he promised, but it all fell out from beneath her.
She felt...stupid, and Yumi didn't feel stupid often. She didn't allow other people to make her feel that way—especially not a man, but tonight rendered her shocked enough that she felt stupid.
Cicadas chirped nearby.
Jungkook broke the silence, but he, too, was quieter than usual. "How's your wrist?"
His fingers kept pushing around in a gentle massage, and she pushed out a sigh. "It's been better."
His fingers tensed. "Dick."
She did something between a snort and a sigh. "Dick, indeed."
The water rippled around them. Jungkook said lowly, "He won't get away with it."
"No," she said firmly. "I won't let him."
"Good."
She shivered as the night breeze swept over them. "How long do you think the party will keep going for?"
Jungkook glanced toward the house. "An hour, give or take. It seems like it's dying down."
Yumi's vacant hand pawed at the water. "We still have to clean up."
"We'll get the others to do it."
Her lips twitched. "I like the way you think, Jeon."
"I thought you might."
True to his prediction, the party was over an hour later. Sounds from the front yard filtered into the backyard, and Yumi and Jungkook could hear Hoseok's boisterous laughter as he bid goodnight to guests.
Yumi half-smiled. "He's been flirting with Yoongi, you know."
"I saw that." Jungkook glanced at her, a smile sneaking onto his features at the sight of hers. "Is it to get under his skin, or because he flirts with everyone?"
Yumi snorted. "Your guess is as good as mine."
"Poor Yoongi."
"And he keeps pinching his cheeks. He pinched mine tonight, and Jesus, I don't know how Yoongi puts up with it." Yumi rubbed her cheek in remembrance. "That shit stings."
Jungkook chuckled. "Hoseok's something else."
"All of our friends are. That's what makes us the happy bunch."
Jungkook nudged their shoulders together. "We're a great happy bunch."
"The best." She grunted. "When Jimin's not using me to make Klia jealous."
