[John and Maddie find Jack, Applejack, and Jessie working a lathe in the barn.]

John: Hey, Jack, Applejack, and Jessie.

Jack: Hey, Pa.

Maddie: Need a hand with that?

Applejack: No, sir and ma'am, I've got it.

John: Looks like you have. You know, you're real good with them tools.

Jessie: Thank you, Ma.

Maddie: You'll make this land real nice one day. Me and your father and my brother and his family, we do our part. By the time your turn comes, hell, this could be the nicest farm in the county.

Jack: Maybe, Pa.

John: You just got to learn to shoot straight or you'll get yourself eaten by some animal.

Applejack: Very funny, Ma.

Maddie: Thank you, daughters and nephew. Soon, it'll be quail season, we should have some fun then.

Jessie: Is there anything you don't like shooting, Ma?

John: Well, I ain't met the thing yet, but as soon as I do I'll let you know. You can even put it in one of them books you read.

Jack: Yeah, maybe I'll do that..."The day John Marston and Maddie Morgan stopped shooting."

Maddie: Now, I ain't no literary woman and your uncle's no literary man, but I don't think that'll sell. People like shooting in them things.

Applejack: I think you may be right there, Ma...

John: So uhh, you ever hear talk about them machines that can make a man fly?

Jessie: Well sure, Ma, everybody knows about that. You know, they're going to be bringing one of those machines around the country next year for demonstration. One of them machines can turn men into angels.

Maddie: One of them machines can turn men into angels...

[Outside, Uncle looks through a spyglass.]

Uncle: John and Maddie, come here. John and Maddie, come here quick! Take a look at that.

[John, Maddie and Uncle see U.S. Army soldiers and lawmen heading into Beecher's Hope.]

John: Jack, Applejack, and Jessie. Go into the house. Lock all the doors. Whatever happens, don't come outside. You hear me? Whatever happens.

Jack: Okay.

Maddie: Come here, daughters and nephew.

[They give them a hug.]

John: Whatever happens, keep the doors locked and your mother and your father inside. Promise me, son. Promise me.

Applejack: Who is it, Ma?

Maddie: Just some old friends. Me and Uncle take care of it. Now you go inside and you keep the doors and the windows locked.

Jessie: I hear you.

John: Then run.

Uncle: Yeah. Run boy and girls!

[Jack, Applejack, and Jessie leave.]

Maddie: Well, old man, looks like things is about to get settled once and for all.

Uncle: So it seems.

John: Come on, old man. I'm gonna need you to help me hold them off.

[They kill the first wave.]

Uncle: Get in there. There'll be more coming!

[John and Maddie go in the house.]

Abigail: What are we gonna do now?

Jack: What's wrong, what's happened?

Maddie: Stay inside, you hear? Like I said. There'll be more coming.

[Jack, Applejack, and Jessie go out to the porch anyway.]

Applejack: Ma, what do they want?

John: I don't know, son and nieces. Whatever it is, it ends here.

Jessie: Look how many there are. They're gonna kill us, aren't they?

Maddie: No, I ain't gonna let that happen.

[In the ensuing minutes, Uncle gets shot up.]

Jack: Uncle, are you alright?

Uncle: Dammit, I'm hit.

[They kill two more waves.]

John: Hang in there, Uncle. I'm gonna get you out of here safe.

Uncle: Ain't time, John and Maddie. I ain't gonna make it off this porch anyhow. You take Jack, Applejack, Jessie, Woody and Abi... take them and... don't worry about me. Just get 'em out of here!

[Uncle dies.]

Applejack: No! Uncle! Please! Oh my God! They killed him!

Maddie: Come on, son. Ain't nothin' we can do for him now.

[They go inside.]

John: We're leaving the farm. I'll watch from the silo. You five go to the barn, get the horses ready.

Woody: John and Maddie...

Maddie: I'll meet you there.

[They solemnly run past Uncle to the barn.]

John: We'll make a run to the barn. Stay close and keep your eyes open!

[Jack, Applejack, and Jessie start slaying the invading Army.]

Maddie: Alright, you're covered. Now, go, GO! Now! Quick! Run for it!

[They get to the barn.]

John: Hey, come on. Now listen, Jack, Applejack, and Jessie, darling, get on this horse and Maddie you get on your horse. Get out of here. Go find a place to hide.

Jessie: You're coming with us, Uncle.

John: I'll catch up. You keep riding and don't look back and don't be worrying about me, you hear? Now get going...

Abigail: You stay out of trouble, John.

John: Ain't no trouble, Abigail. Ain't no trouble. I love you.

Abigail: I love you.

John: Now go. Git.

Maddie: Bro, please be safe. I love you.

John: I love you too, sis.

[They ride off. John peeks through the door as he sees the U.S. Army aiming at the barn. John then comes out and in a last stand shoots some of the soldiers, then gets fatally shot by all of the soldiers. John coughs and falls to his knees, filled with bloody holes while Ross holsters his gun and smokes his cigar, while John is still breathing, and eventually falls back and dies. Ross and the other soldiers walk away]

Abigail, Maddie, and Woody: Did you hear that? Jack, Applejack, and Jessie, we have to go back for Pa and Uncle John!

[They ride back and find John dead; later, they bury him. The time fasts forward three years later, Jack, Applejack, and Jessie stand at the same gravesite to bury their mothers and their father and wears John's hat and Applejack wears Maddie's hat and Jessie wears Woody's hat.]
