[John and Maddie go out to Jack's, Applejack's, and Jessie's "reading tree" to find them absent.]

Uncle: John and Maddie! John and Maddie!

John: What is it, old man?

Uncle: It's Jack, Applejack, and Jessie. The kids...the kids...well, I just saw them out in the valley. Seems your tales of hunting got the better of they. Said they were going up to the pass, track down that grizzly that's been seen up there.

Maddie: Kids can't hunt a grizzly, thing'll eat them alive.

Uncle: I know. I tried to stop them.

John: But you're as worthless as a lawyer at a lynching. Damn you, old man! This is my son and my nieces. Anything happens to them, you'll wish it was you that bear attacked.

(John and Maddie follow Rufus as he sniffs out his son and her daughters)

Maddie: Go on. Find Jack, Applejack, and Jessie, boy. Where's Jack, Applejack, and Jessie? That's it. Good boy. What you got, boy? You smell something? Hurry, Rufus! You can find them, boy. Where's Jack, Applejack, and Jessie? Where are they? Come on, boy! Where are they?

(Rufus leads John and Maddie to Nekoti Rock)

John: Jack, Applejack, and Jessie! Can you hear me, Jack, Applejack, and Jessie? Jack, Applejack, and Jessie! You up here?

(John and Maddie see a bear. Behind them, Jack, Applejack, and Jessie hide by a rock)

Jack: Pa, help me! I'm hurt!

Maddie: Jack, Applejack, and Jessie! Stay down! Don't move! Keep your head down!

(John and Maddie Finishes off the Grizzly)

John: What the hell were you thinking, going off on your own? You're just a boy and you're just girls.

Applejack: No, I'm not! I can skin an Elk, break horses...

Maddie: C'mon, let's get you home.

(Jack, Applejack, and Jessie get onto John's and Maddie horses with them)

John: Now hold tight. You all right?

Jessie: Yeah, I think so.

Maddie: You're lucky to be alive, you stupid boy and you stupid girls. What did I tell you about going off by yourself?

Jack: I go off by myself plenty. You just don't know about it. You're never around.

John: So this is my fault? You disobeyed me.

Applejack: I was trying to prove myself.

Maddie: Prove what? By gettin' yourself killed?

Jessie: You're always tellin' me I read too many books, that I'm not a real woman.

John: I never said that.

Jack: I just thought if I could do something you'd like, maybe you wouldn't go away again.

Maddie: Daughters and nephew, I ain't goin' anywhere. And, believe me, neither are you for a real long time. What's your father going to say?

Applejack: I'm sorry, Ma. Please don't be angry.

John: I ain't angry. I'm disappointed. Don't you ever run off on your own like that again.

Jessie: Alright, alright. I told you I was sorry.

Maddie: What would have happened if I hadn't come along?

Jack: I don't know. I'd probably be dead.

John: You'd be a pile of bones right now.

Applejack: What would you care? I'm just a nuisance to you anyway.

Maddie: That ain't true, Jack, Applejack, and Jessie. I'd do anythin' for you, you know that.

Jessie: I guess there's only room for one hero in this family.

John: Trust me, son and nieces, I ain't no hero. I'm just glad you're safe. Going after a grizzly? What were you thinkin'? You've only been hunting twice!

Jack: I'm not a little kid anymore. What were you doing at my age?

Maddie: Bad things. Things nobody should do. But your Pa and me, we didn't have what you have.

Applejack: Yeah, yeah, I know. I should be grateful.

John: I'm not askin' you to be grateful. I'm askin' you to do what I say, before you get yourself killed.

Jessie: It's always one set of rules for you, and another set for everybody else. You think I don't know what you did back in the old days? I'm not stupid.

Maddie: You could've fooled me.

Jack: You think I didn't sit up and listen to Dutch and Bill telling all those stories? You think I don't know who you are?

John: It ain't no secret I didn't get these scars fallin' over a church.

Applejack: But nobody tells me anythin'. You and Pa pretend like nothin' happened.

Maddie: We just want a better life for you, daughter and nephew. Now rest, we'll have you home soon.

(John, Maddie, Jack, Applejack, and Jessie arrive at Beecher's Hope )

Jessie: I'm sorry I made you worry, Ma.

John: Don't be too eager to grow up, son and nieces. Ain't as much fun as it looks. When you'll be ready to hunt bears I'll take you.
