Chapter 9: Kirby the Bat
"Are you sure they'll be up there?" Mikey asks as we climb the side of the tallest building in the city.
"It's secluded and high up." Donnie groans as he pulls himself up with the metal in his hands. "I'm positive that Mr O'Neil and April will be at the top." We hear April's faint scream from above, confirming Donnie's theory. "See?"
Raph rolls his eyes, "Alright, Mr. Know It All."
"Gross, you expect me to eat that?" I hear my best friend whine once I make it to the top. I look at April and watch her step back, away from the "meal" her father was trying to provide for her. I look down and feel my hands begin to sweat with fear. We were so high up. I've never been afraid of heights, but this was something else compared to what I was used to.
"Mr. O'Neil, fly away from April." Mikey says cautiously, trying to creep forward toward our friend. She had her back pressed against the wall. She didn't seem as panicked as she had when she was in the air.
"What are you guys doing here?" April's eyes shoot daggers straight through the turtles.
"We are just here to help." I respond blandly as she glances at me.
"I can handle myself." She whispers harshly. "It's just my dad."
"Says the girl who was just screaming from being flown all over the city." Raph throws his hands up and scoffs.
"I wasn't scared!!!" She says defensively, causing Kirby to shriek and attempt to fly forward to grab her up again. I watch him closely as he eyes the turtles. He seemed protective of her. He's cognitive.
"Yeah, right." Raph presses.
"April, get over yourself." I snap. "It's not their fault that your damn father turned into this." I motion to the bat, flapping his wings in the night as he circles the building.
"They are the reason the mutagen fell and hit him in the first place!" She shouts.
"Let's just leave her up here." Raph rolls his eyes, throwing his hands up in defeat. "She clearly doesn't want our help."
Just as Raph says that Kirby swoops down again and nearly knocks April off of the building. She squeals, clutching the edge of the wall behind her as she presses her body closer to it.
"Come on, April." I step forward and offer her my hand. She takes it and we both duck as Kirby tries to grab at her once again. This time, Leo kicks Kirby away giving us time to make our escape from where he had chosen to nest.
When we made it to a smaller building top, we were all out of breath. April thankfully, chose to stay with us as we all took a moment to figure out what Kirby could be going through.
"I think he was trying to take care of you in the only way he possibly could right now." I speak up, agreeing with Donnie's earlier theory. "He was trying to feed you when we got up there."
"But he can't take care of me right now, he's a bat." She crosses her arms, slightly pouting.
"We'll get him back, April." Donnie tries to comfort her, placing a hand on her shoulder.
She shrugs him off and walks toward the edge of the building. She faces the city, probably taking in the view as she thinks. I feel that April was trying to form the right words to say to our friends. Even though she was mad at them, I could tell she still cared for them the way she always had before.
Donnie's head lowers as his face is covered with a clear sadness. I put my hand on his arm to comfort him and he gives me a nod letting me know he is okay.
