A loner sitting in the corner
of a staircase, near the exit
(fourth floor, the one that's
rarely frequented during rush hours).
Ashamed to be seen,
solitarily eating
in the middle of the hallway.
Awkward and out of place
like a teenager at Chuck E. Cheese's;
dodging gazes of strangers
passing by.Lowered head,
looking down at her shoes.
She mows through her sandwich
so that she can run to the library
and hide her face behind books
or go on a computer,
so that she looks less awkward
and obvious;
with a clear label
on her forehead:
"A Loner".
