I'm awaken, surprisingly, by Newt. I yawn and look up at him. His brown eyes stare into mine, captivating my every thought. He smiles shyly. However, the moment is cut short when I see Rachel standing behind him.
I stand up and return my gaze to Newt. "How did you get out of the Slammer?" I ask curiously.
"Rachel told Harriet that she actually remembered who I was," he says.
"But, I'm gonna be locked up in the Slammer for a day since I lied. Ironic, huh," Rachel chimes in.
I nod. "So, I guess all that's left is my fate."
Suddenly, I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around and it's Lucy.
"Harriet wants to see you now," she says, her voice dull.
I exhale. "Okay."
I walk to the Holding Hut, and Harriet, Sonya, and other important figures of the Glade wait for me. I see Beth standing in the back of the room. Newt, Rachel, and Lucy file into the room.
"Alright everyone," Harriet says. "The time has come for the decision on Maya's fate. We know strange things have been happening ever since her mysterious prediction. So far, it looks like she's been right."
Harriet turns to me. "Maya, d'you have any answers you would like to share with us that may deem you innocent?"
I sigh. I might as well tell her what I've seen, whether they be actual memories, or just figments of my imagination.
"I had a dream that I was being tested on by some weird dude. Said I was participating for a good cause," I stop, and look at Newt. He looks back at me, concern among his dark brown eyes.
"And after those memories, I suddenly realized that Newt does look familiar. I don't know from where, but he just does."
I look over at Harriet, hoping that she'll believe me. She nods with a slight smile, and I know my hopes were correct. Just as she is about to say something, she is cut off by a shrill voice.
"Very nice performance," Beth says, walking over to me. "I know what you've done! You think you've got them convinced? Well think again!" She points, and I see Sonya walking up to me. Her eyes are full of anger.
"What the-" I say, completely speechless.
"You," Sonya says between gritted teeth, her finger pointed directly at my chest.
I back up, and bump into someone. I turn around, and it's Newt. He steadies myself and I regain composure.
"You're evil," Sonya says, walking up to me.
Harriet steps up. "What're you talking about?" she asks, disbelief on her face.
Sonya turns and faces her. "I've seen her through the Changing. She's been testing on us. She's the reason why we're here!"
Her words hit me like a brick. I stand, completely speechless. I couldn't have worked against them. There's no way. Why hasn't this problem of me being evil shown up in the past? It doesn't make sense. But then again, WICKED can do whatever they want. They're the masterminds.
"Now that's where you're bloody wrong," Newt says, pointing his index finger in their face.
I look at him, tears welling up in my eyes. I carefully push his pointing hand down. He faces me. "What's wrong?" he asks, his voice lowering when he notices my change of emotion.
"What if they're right. What if I am the reason you're all here."
Newt stares at me, processing my words in his head. Suddenly, Beth screams out, "Get her and tie her up!"
Multiple people race to my side, tying my hands and legs together, as I struggle against them. Newt is lost in the sea of girls. Harriet tries to intervene, when Sonya suddenly ties a rope around her. Harriet protests, but nothing will stop the ambush.
The girls take me out in the Glade, right near the walls of the Maze, and sit my bound body down on the ground. They circle around me, spears gripped tightly in their hands. I decide it's no use to try and get away; they'll just stab me to death.
I notice Sonya walking my way, and refuse to make eye contact. Why is she suddenly on Beth's side?
She crouches down beside me, a pocket knife held firmly in her hand.
"Why are you acting like this?" I ask her.
"Just shush," she whispers, then stands up.
"Alright, it's time we get rid of her once and for all," Sonya announces, her voice booming across the Glade.
She points at me. "You've tricked us for way too long. Now we know the truth," she exclaims, her tone a bit overexaggerated.
I see Beth walk up to me. A large, devilish smile is plastered on her face. "Have fun sleeping with the Grievers," she hisses.
Just then, a loud, mechanical roar fills the air. My heart beat quickens. The walls suddenly start shifting, and they slowly close. Sonya walks up to me, and hooks her arm under my shoulder. She nods to Beth, and she takes my other arm. They get me to my feet.
I then hear footsteps. I turn my head and it's Newt. "I won't let you do this!" he yells, running to stand in front of me.
Beth drops her grip from me, grabs her spear, and swiftly brings the end of it down on his head. He stumbles and falls backwards.
I let out a mangled cry and struggle profusely against Sonya's grip. Beth throws her spear aside, and then grabs my arm again.
"Now we wait," Sonya says, eyeing the walls as they slowly come together, the view of the Maze getting smaller and smaller.
They begin to walk up to the closing doors. I struggle to be freed, but realize it's no use. I unwillingly accept my fate. Just as I think I'm about to be thrown into the Maze, things take a wildly different turn.
Sonya pulls me away from Beth's grip, then pushes her into the Maze as the gates close. Various girls gasp from the change of events. Beth lands on the stone ground with a thud, and let's out a shrill cry as the doors to the Maze slam shut.
I sit on the ground, dazed for a moment. I look up at Sonya, who smiles at me. "You okay?" she asks.
I nod slowly, still surprised. I then jolt up and over to Newt who lays in the grass, unconscious. Blood runs down his face.
"We need a Med-Jack!" Sonya yells.
Everyone is silent.
"I'll explain everything later!" Sonya says. "We need to get the boy help first!"
Lucy and another girl walk over, and lift Newt up. His head bobs to the side as he is lifted up, and I can get a better view of his face. You'll be okay, Newt. I promise.
"Oh, and someone go untie Harriet!" Sonya says.
I look over at Sonya. "How did you-," I begin, completely speechless. "I thought you-"
Sonya laughs. "It was a sham. A trap to get rid of Beth. I had to make it really look like I was against you. But I never thought you were a traitor."
"Wow," I laugh. "You're good."
She bows, "Thanks. I try."
"So, now what?" I ask. "Am I off the hook?"
"For now. Until something else strange happens," she winks, then nudges me on the shoulder. "Kidding. We all know WICKED is behind this." And with that she walks away.
I smile awkwardly. "Yeah," I mumble.
I can't help but think about what Beth said. What if I really am the reason behind this?
