I sit beside Newt, his mouth just barely open. His chest rises and falls with even breaths. I brush a piece of hair out of his face to get a better look. He's beyond handsome. Suddenly, he stirs in his unconscious state. "Maya..," he mumbles, his eyes tightly shut. My heart thumps rapidly. Is he dreaming about me?
"Maya?" a voice says from behind, startling me.
"Uh, yes?" I ask, turning in my seat. Rachel stands in the doorway.
"How is he doing?" she asks, making her way closer to the bed.
"Good," I say simply. "Lucy said he-"
I stop, as my eyes wander over to Rachel. I stare as I slowly watch her lean over Newt's bed and kiss him on the forehead. My heart skips a beat, sending a wave of shock throughout my body.
She glances over at me. "Sorry, what were you saying?"
I refocus, bringing myself back to reality. "Oh, just that, uh, Lucy said he was stable and would wake up pretty soon."
"Oh, okay," Rachel says. "I gotta go. If Newt wakes up while you're here, just tell him to mind message me."
Mind message? She made up a name for it now?
"Yeah, sure," I say, hoping my tone wouldn't betray how annoyed I feel.
"Thanks," she says, heading for the door, "Bye."
"See ya," I say, then wave to her.
I get up, and head for the door, when I hear the rustling of bed sheets. I turn around, and see Newt, his eyes slowly opening. He glances at me and a weak smile forms on his face.
"Newt," I gasp, my breath catching in my throat. I can feel a large smile form on my face. "I knew you'd be okay."
"Couldn't give up now," Newt whispers, studying my face. "I had a dream about you."
My cheeks flush, and I quickly look away. "Oh," I say, my gaze still trained to the floor. "Yeah, I heard you saying my name."
"Don't be so modest," Newt laughs. "You did give me a kiss on the forehead after all."
My eyes widen, and my heart flutters. He was somewhat aware when that happened? But it was Rachel who did that. Why would he assume I did?
"Oh, no, that wasn't-" I start, but am cut off by Newt.
"It's okay, no need to hide it," Newt says, a playful smile forming on his face.
"No, Newt, that wasn't me who kissed you," I state, with all seriousness in my voice.
For some reason I didn't feel right letting him believe that I kissed him. I don't want him to get the wrong idea.
Newt's playful smile suddenly disappears. "Well if it wasn't you, then who was it?"
The door then creaks open, and Rachel walks in.
"Newt, you're okay," Rachel says, going to his side. Her arms are outstretched. "I felt your presence."
I raise an eyebrow, because that just sounds creepy.
Newt, looking at her awkwardly, accepts the hug and smiles weakly, like when he first woke up.
"I'll go tell Lucy and Sonya you woke up," I offer, glancing at Newt.
He nods awkwardly, still in the embrace with Rachel.
I exit the room and walk out to the Glade to find Lucy and Sonya. When I finally find them, they're in the lunch hall.
"Lucy," I say, walking up to her, "Newt's awake."
