Comfort

Cream laid down on her bed freezing. The cold didn't bother her and she couldn't get the strength to move anyway. She had just finished crying and felt weak. Her room was lit dimly by the light coming in through the curtains and it was quiet other than the raindrops on the window and roof. Her only comfort was a small plush of Tails that Amy had given her a few years before. She had it clutched close against her and couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt that only continued to rack up in her. She sneezed before holding the plush closer. "Cream?.." She heard Tails as he knocked on the door. "G-Go Away..." She said already knowing he wouldn't with how she sounded. The door cracked open and she saw him walking inside out of the corner of her eye. "It's alright Cream..." He said walking over. "I.. I just wanted to help.." She said unable to look at him. "And you helped a lot.. You accidentally broke a few things but it's nothing to worry about.." He reassured her sitting on the edge of her bed. "I'm sure we can find you a job you're good at.. Just give it time.." He said reaching over to comfort her. He hesitated as his arm reached her and he set it back down against the bed. "I'm useless... Isn't that what everyone thinks?.." She suddenly asked causing him to feel slightly mad. "You're not useless.. You just.. haven't found your thing yet..." He said setting his hand on her shoulder. Her fur was freezing and he recognized the small plush she held closely. He moved his hand over to her ear and began brushing it feeling how smooth and fuzzy it was even though it was freezing too. "I found out how good I was with machines after trying out different things.. you just need to keep searching.." He said noticing she finally began to look at him. "Even if you don't have a job it doesn't mean you're useless.. No matter what, I know every time Amy sees you she feels better with you just being there and talking to her.. Sonic and Knuckles are both motivated just by seeing you.. Sonic feels motivated because me and you... We're a part of what he keeps fighting Eggman and a lot of other things for.. Knuckles himself told me that every time he sees you he feels inspired. You may not know what your good at yet but you keep trying things anyway... That's what he told me.. " He said noticing her slightly tense. "And that's not even it.. Vanilla doesn't only work hard because of you she also does it because when she sees you smile all her efforts feel worth it. Shadow doesn't say much I can tell you remind him of his promise to Maria. Just like with Sonic your one of the reasons he keeps fighting.. Maybe even one of his biggest reasons.." He finished while brushing her ear. "Thank you Tails.." She said looking down at the pillow still bothered. "Tails... What.. Do you see me as?..." She said sitting up and placing the plush on the desk before wiping her eyes. "Me?.. I.. I see you as not only my closet friend but also the kindest and most cheerful being I've ever met.. You're irreplaceable to me and I'm glad I've been able to even meet you." He said thinking about his words. "But.. Why?.." She asked starting to tear up again. "Well.. Multiple reasons.. You're.. Undeniably cute.. After working at my workshop or coming back from an adventure it's nice to hear your voice and everytime you hug me after I get back I feel comfortable and safe.. It's nice to hear about your day and what you think about things even if I don't really care about them.. The times you surprise me with your flower crowns make me feel happy and especially now of all times I want to finally help you after everything you've done for me.. Even if you don't know you did something or didn't do it on purpose.." He said awkwardly turning away to hide his blush from talking about her so much. She was silent for a few seconds and he got worried he said something wrong. "I.. I can understand if you still want to be left alone..." He added. "N-No.." She said suddenly pulling him into a hug. "I'm sorry but.. I need someone.." She said. "It's alright.. Do you want me to do anything?.." He asked hugging her back. "I don't.. Wait.. Could you.. Brush my ear like before?.. It.. Felt warm and comfortable.." She asked after a few seconds of thinking. "like this?.." He asked beginning to brush her ear like she asked. "Yeah... " She replied while buried in his thick chest fur. She felt his tails wrap around her and said "I know how you don't like others touching your tails.. You don't need to.." She cut off as he interrupted "You've always been an exception.. Besides.. I want to.." He said as his tails found their places around her. "Th.. Thank you.." She replied feeling warmer. "Anytime.. Really.." He said still brushing her ear. She felt comfortable but wasn't sure what to do next. Tails felt his blush only worsening because he could feel her heart beating slower than his. He looked down at Cream who seemed more relaxed and tired than he had ever seen her before. He tensed up slightly as lightning suddenly struck nearby outside the window. "Tails?.." She said looking up at him. He looked at her again and realized "Oh.. Right.." He said as he began brushing her ear again. She paused for a few seconds fell back against him. "Are you scared of lightning?.." She asked cuddling against him. "Yes.. " He replied knowing she already knew. He didn't bother hiding how he glanced out the window at the rain. "I.. Am too.." She admitted weakly. "That's comforting.." He said relaxing a bit. "Really?.."She asked out loud growing excited. "yeah.. For some reason I thought you were going to make fun of me.." He trailed off. "Why would I do that?.. That's.. That's just.." She cut off as he scratched her ear and interrupted. "But anyway.. That plush.. That was one of your Christmas gifts a few years ago right?.." He asked. "Yeah.. Amy gave it to me and I just couldn't stay away from it.." She said feeling Embarrassed. "Well how does it feel being hugged by the real Tails?.." He asked before taking his other hand off her ear and wrapping it around her. "It.. Feels... Warm and Safe.. " She replied relaxing in his grip. "If I'm not able to help you get your mind off things just hold him really close.. I'm sure he will be able to help you.." He said with one of his Tails quickly grabbing it then returning to it's place. "I.. Thank you.." She said grabbing it and holding it closely. "What about you?.." She asked. "There she is.. Back to worrying about everyone but herself... That's the Cream I know.. And love too.." He quickly added. "Huh?.. What was that last part?.." She asked confused. "I said That's the Cream I know and Love.." He responded before kissing her forehead. She felt paralyzed by the sudden news along with the kiss. He questioned whether it was a good idea to tell her so soon but smiled as she pulled him back into a tight hug and finally grew another cute smile. "I love you too.." She quietly confessed. He thought about saying something but instead began brushing her ear gently. After a few minutes he asked "Feel better?.." "Yes.. Much.." She replied. "Then you should go tell everyone.. Vanilla and Amy have been worried sick about you but didn't want to make things worse.." He said causing her to tense. "They.. Have?.." She repeated. "That's why I'm here.. Amy called me.. Something about her being held up and Vanilla wanting someone who could understand what you're going through." He finished. "Oh.. So.. You came all the way here just to help?.." She asked moving her head back to look back outside. "Yeah.. Only took around 30 minutes since I couldn't use the tornado.." He said causing her to tear up slightly. "Thanks Tails.." She said before she buried her head back against him. He remained silent and within a few minutes her grip loosened and he could hear her breathing. He let his Tails lean over the edge of the bed and held her up as her arms loosened from around him and he laid her down and covered her in her blanket. " She shifted seemingly uncomfortable and he quietly walked over to the door and left. He looked down the hall and saw Vanilla patiently waiting in their living room. "Miles.. I need to talk to you.." She said said without looking back at him. "You heard everything right?.." He guessed. "Yes.. But I had only meant to make sure she was okay.. I didn't know you.." She trailed off and he saw her brush her eyes. "Please.. Come have a seat.. She said standing up and motioning at the couch. He sat down and she sat next to him. "I didn't know you had feelings for her.. I've been telling her she can't date yet not because she hasn't matured but.. Because I knew her feelings for you and didn't want her to potentially lose one of her friends.." She explained with her voice cracking. "My point is.. If you decide to ask her out.. anything at all.. I'll support you two.." She said looking over at him crying. "I.." He started but cut off unsure what to do. "Don't mind the tears.. I'm just.. Happy.." She said brushing her eyes. "I have a question then.." He asked. "Yes?.." She said looking back over. "I would to stay over tonight.. After I left the room she looked a bit shifty while she was sleeping and.. I'd like to be able to comfort her if she suddenly wakes..." He asked awkwardly. "Alright.. You should go back now.. I.. Need to think before I go to sleep.." She said brushing her eyes. He hesitantly walked back into the hall and put his hand on the handle. He felt paralyzed for a brief moment before he opened the door and walked back in. The room was dimmer than before and his eyes adjusted after a few seconds. He walked over to the bed and climbed in carefully so Cream didn't wake. It was only a few seconds before he felt her grab him and snuggle against him. He couldn't see but could tell she had relaxed. He hugged her back and fell asleep hearing her breaths, the rain, and her slow heartbeat..
