As you turn a corner, you hear familiar voices. "Shut it! Seriously, are you a debt collector?"
Seung Bin's voice rang out, and you couldn't help but roll your eyes as you recognized it.You quickly made your way over to them and slapped him away. "Didn't I tell you to leave them alone?" you scolded, looking at the three of them. Your gaze landed on Kyung Jun, who seemed to be avoiding eye contact.
Turning your attention to Joo Won and Da Beom, you placed a reassuring hand on Joo Won's shoulder. "Hey, I promise you'll get your money as soon as we leave this place." you assured him, shooting a pointed look at your three friends who were standing to the side. They flinch at the seriousness in your eyes.
"I'm going up, are you guys coming?" you asked, glancing at each one of them. Da Beom anxiously looked at Kyung Jun, almost as if seeking his approval, and then at you, his expression uneasy.
"No, I'm fine here." he replied quietly.
"Okay then... I'll just get my phone, I left it in my room." you said, trying to hide your concern. You didn't wanna leave them alone, but you had to message your parents so they wouldn't worry. With one last reprimanding look at Kyung Jun and a worried glance at Da Beom, you hurriedly made your way to your dorm.
After retrieving your phone, you returned to the gym. Ding! You opened it to find an envelope icon on your screen. Curious, you tapped it, and a message popped up that read: "Your occupation is civilian." along with the list of rules:
1. The participants will be secretly assigned as civilians, a doctor, a police officer, and a mafia. The doctor can prevent the execution of a participant of their choice. The police officer can find out the occupation of the participant of their choice.
2. Starting at 8 a.m. to midnight, the participants will select the mafia members through voting.
3. At midnight, the participants with the most votes will get executed and their occupation will be revealed.
4. After the voting ends at midnight, all participants except for the mafia members will go to sleep.
5. During the night, while the participants are asleep, the mafia must execute someone themselves.
6. When either team civilians or team mafia kill all of the other team and win, its game over. Civilians, the doctor, and the police are on the same team.
"The Mafia game starts now. Participants, please find the mafia and start voting now."
"What the fuck?" You let out in confusion, just as you get another notification.
Heo Yool: Hi, losers. Let the game begin now.
You sighed, it was probably another one of his pranks, it wasn't far from what he normally did. You wouldn't put it past him so you paid it no mind. Deciding not to dwell on it too much, you voted for him in the game and continued on your way to the gym.
"What are you guys doing?" you exclaimed as you walked into the room, only to find Da Beom with a bloody nose and Jun Hee and Hyun Ho in the midst of it.
"Hey, Kyung Jun," you said urgently as you pulled him away from the commotion, searching his eyes for some sign of recognition or remorse. Instead, you found a steely gaze that you couldn't quite read. "What did I tell you earlier?"
His expression remained stoic as he looked you straight in the eyes, his silence stretching out for a few tense moments before he spoke coldly, "Just stay out of this." With that, he pulled his arm out of your hand and walked away, leaving you with a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach.
You grumbled under your breath as you watched the three walk away before turning your attention to Da Beom and Joo Won. Placing your hands on Da Beom's shoulders, you looked at each of them in turn, your gaze filled with pity. "I'm sorry about them. I'll talk to them about this. I'll make them stop, I promise," you assured them.
They kept their heads down, their expressions a mix of resignation and gratitude as they shyly nodded in response. "Thank you," Da Beom muttered softly.
"Honestly, I don't know what you see in him," Hyun Ho remarked, breaking the silence.
"What do you care?" you snap, your tone defensive. It was none of his business. But you couldn't deny it was a question that lingered in your mind often, one that you couldn't quite answer, because there's too much to say.
Some of it can be named, like the way he softens his gaze when you're alone, or it's the way he treats you differently from the rest, or the way he makes your heart beat, all these little things can't help but make you swoon over the guy. But sometimes, you just can't bear to watch him do terrible things like this to innocent people. It was a conflict of emotions that left you feeling torn and uncertain, a side of him that you wished wasn't there.
—
Now you're headed to the boys' room, you figured they'd be hanging out there.
"What was that all about?" you asked as you entered, looking at each of them in turn.
"Fine, I'll let it go... but just this once." You said, taking your seat next to Kyung Jun.
"Did you also get the mafia game?" the boy next to you asked.
"Yeah, I'm a civilian. You?" you replied.
"Same." he said.
"Oh, that means we're all on the civilians' team then." Jin Ha commented. You hummed in response.
Suddenly, a siren-sounding alarm blared from the speakers, filling the room.
"The voting ends in one minute."
At the same time, your phone opens to show a timer. 55 seconds left. Outside, you could hear muffled talking and footsteps.
"The fuck.." Kyung Jun muttered, going to open the door and see what the commotion was all about.
As the timer on the phone reached zero, the announcement came: "The voting has ended. Heo Yool, the one with the most votes, will be executed."
Screams erupted from outside, and you hurried towards Kyung Jun, who was already standing in the doorway. As you all exited the room, you saw Heo Yool clutching his head in pain, then abruptly stopping. When he looked up, his eyes were there, but his pupils were gone. A chill ran down your spine, and you took a step back, bumping into Kyung Jun's chest.
Suddenly, Heo Yool dropped to the ground, slamming his head onto the floor repeatedly. The sickening sound of each impact made you want to look away, but you felt frozen in place. A hand lightly tugged at your wrist, urging you to move, but you couldn't bring yourself to budge. The sight was horrifying, and you were frozen, unable to tear your gaze away from the scene unfolding before you.
"Stop that!" a classmate shouted, rushing to pull Heo Yool up. But he didn't stop. Instead, Heo Yool ran into a framed picture on the wall, shattering the glass and cutting his face. Then he turned towards the painting on the opposing wall, his movements erratic and unsettling. Glass shards were embedded in his head as he faced the crowd of students, who were at a loss for words at the horrifying scene unfolding before them.
Then, without warning, Heo Yool started running towards the window. You're forcefully pulled back, and a protective arm places itself in front of you as you're pinned against the wall. The chaos in the room intensified as Heo Yool leaped out of the window, his actions leaving everyone in shock and confusion.
"Heo Yool was a civilian."
Gasping for air, you didn't realize you had been holding your breath. Your gaze followed the arm over you, matching it to a face, and you saw none other than Kyung Jun. Wide-eyed, you looked up at him, finding his expression mirroring your own. Before you could speak, a lullaby began playing from the speakers, its melody filling the room.
As you tried to process the situation, you felt a sudden heaviness in your neck and head. Then, you collapsed to the ground. The last thing you saw before everything went dark was Kyung Jun beside you, his arm still draped protectively over you.
