Kang Nari

Kang Nari knew she had to take matters into her own hands. Her family was planning something. Why else would they suddenly donate to the school in her name? Something was not right, and she needed to figure it out.

And so, she decided to talk to Butler Kim that evening following the dinner. Her day was ruined due to earlier events, but she knew she had to cross this bridge early on before it came to bite her in the back.

If her family was indeed planning something, then she had to make sure she wouldn't end up being a pawn.

"Butler Kim." Nari called out from the backseat.

"I would like to speak to my brother." She declared. Nari supposed her brother was the best option to talk to out of her entire family. From what she could remember, her brother didn't necessarily hate her, but he was never too affectionate towards her either. He remained bounded to civility as if he were talking to anyone else.

Nari didn't know what she preferred. The indifference of her brother or the outright hatred of her sister?

She had always believed that opposite of love wasn't hate but rather indifference. Thus, her brother's indifference towards her hurt Nari more than her sister's sharp words.

A beat. Another. Then another.

Three beats of silence before Butler Kim gathered himself to answer.

"Ms. Nari, I do not--" He began, only to be cut off by the sharp voice of Nari.

"I was not asking." Nari found it blasphemous at times when she thought about how she needed the permission to speak to her own family.

"He is not in the country, right now." Butler Kim pacified.

"When is he expected back?" Nari knew she had to take advantage of the burst of confidence she was having in the moment before she ended up succumbing to her own cowardice.

"He is in Paris currently, left not too long ago and is expected back within a week or so." Nari did not bother listening to the rest of his statement. She knew the conclusion Butler Kim was drawing at.

Her brother was in France. He was there for a short trip.

Nari's blood ran cold at the conclusion she arrived at.

Her brother had gone to France to fetch something or rather someone.

She was coming back. Her sister was coming back.

Nari had been fortunate to have avoided her sister successfully after years of staying abroad but Korea was a small country and now that Nari attended Shinhwa, there was no doubt that she would have to eventually end up facing her sister.

The relationship with her sister was complicated to say the least. From as far back as Nari's memory went, she only recalled the sharp words of her sister and her stepmother. Nari wondered if she had done something to warrantee that hate but her memory betrayed her.
