It was twilight as I walked with my best friend, Liam. Patrolling our borders. Making sure the pack is safe. Liam is the son of Beta Vincent. He will take over as Beta when I take over as Alpha. We grew up together. Inseparable.

Just as I come from a long line of Alphas in the Ward family, Liam comes from a long line of Betas in the Porter family. He has been trained up to be my Beta, just as I have been trained up to be the Alpha.

"You've seemed distracted recently," Liam spoke.

I looked at him, and glanced away. I hadn't told anyone about Ben, not even Liam. It had been a couple weeks since Ben and I met, and we have been sneaking in many secret visits. These visits consisted of long talks, kisses, and loving embraces. All of which made me fall in love with him even more. Our connection was growing stronger, and I couldn't be happier.

I learned about Ben's parents, and how they died when he was very young. Something that I could relate to somewhat, as my mother died when I was young, as well. I told him how my father has remained mateless since then. And how I choose to believe the Moon Goddess made things this way so another person is not cursed with living with my father's cruelty for the rest of their life.

Ben and I have learned so much about each other from our long talks. I cannot wait until our next meeting so I can just drink him in even more.

"Really?" I spoke to Liam.

He nodded.

"I've just been... training a lot, is all. Kind of tired," I muttered.

"Tell me about it, man. My dad has been relentless with me. He has too much damn time on his hands," he grumbled and rolled his eyes.

Liam's father, much like mine, does not have a mate. It wasn't that he lost his mate or anything, he's just never had one. That happens sometimes. The Moon Goddess does not have a destined mate for everyone, I suppose. Vincent saw it as very important to have an heir, so he explored surrogacy. And that's how Liam was born.

Although Vincent has some similarities to my father in that regard, their personalities couldn't be more different. Liam is the same as his father in the sense that he is easy-going, forgiving, laid back, and just overall a decent person. I couldn't be more grateful that I did not inherit my father's personality the way that Liam did.

"Any signs of a mate?" I asked him.

"For me?" Liam blushed, and looked away. "Uhh, nope. Nothing. You?"

I did not respond as I contemplated. Liam is my best friend. Surely I can trust him with this secret. Right?

I guess I took too long to respond as Liam moved in front of me and faced me, stopping us in our tracks, and pulling me from my thoughts. I met his gaze.

"No. Fucking. Way." he proclaimed in shock.

"Pick your jaw up off the ground, Porter. It's not attractive," I retorted.

"You have a mate," he said, eyes still wide.

"I never said-"

"The fuck you didn't. So, who is she?"

I sighed and walked around him, continuing on our path. Liam quickly caught up to me to harass me some more.

"What's going on? Why are you being so secretive about this?" His tone held a more serious note to it now. I sighed and turned around to face him.

"He," I said bluntly.

"What?"

"Who is he." Evidently I need to spell it out for him.
