Benjamin
I awoke from my dreamless sleep to my mate's hushed voice.
"How is he now? Is he alright?"
"He is, I've just kept him at home so he's safe," a voice responded, and I couldn't place who the owner of it was. A sigh.
"I'm glad he's okay," Jackson's voice replied.
"How long will the doctor keep Ben here?"
"He told me today that he's doing better, he just needs to heal from the injuries. He's still a bit dehydrated though, so he'll need the IV fluids for a little longer," Silence followed Jackson's response.
"This wasn't your fault, Jackson," the other voice finally chimed in.
"My only regret... is not making him suffer like he made Ben suffer. His death was too merciful."
"It's over now. That's what matters. You got to him in time, and he's safe now."
I slowly opened my eyes and blinked to adjust to the brightness. Jackson and Liam stood by the door. Jackson seemed to sense I was awake, as he turned his head toward me before rushing to my side.
"Good morning, baby," he whispered as he placed a soft kiss to my head. I sat up more and felt an excruciating twinge in my side, which made the room spin for a moment, and caused me to draw in a sharp breath. "What hurts?" I placed my right hand on my side.
"Right here," I whispered as I held my hand there while the pain subsided.
"That's your fractures. I'll get the doctor to get you something for it, okay?" I shook my head.
"No, I'm okay. It's going away now," I told my mate. He raised his eyebrows at me, silently asking if I'm sure. I grinned at him. "I'm fine." He hesitated, but nodded.
"Liam brought us breakfast." I glanced at the figure stood by the door and smiled.
"Thank you, Liam." He stepped forward and returned the smile.
"Not a problem," he spoke softly, as if his voice could potentially break me. "You just work on getting better, alright?" I nodded in response.
"Jackson, I'll be around for a little while if you need anything, okay?" Jackson nodded.
"Thanks again, Liam." Jackson spoke. Liam smiled at both of us before leaving the room. Jackson grabbed the wooden tray Liam had brought, and placed it on the nightstand next to the bed. There were two plates adorned with avocado toast and scrambled eggs. The bright green and yellow looked so pretty beside each other. My mouth watered at the sight.
"I'll help you eat, okay?" Jackson told me.
"I can eat with one arm, Jackson," I chuckled.
"Just let me take care of you, baby." He lifted a fork and stabbed a bite of eggs before bringing it to my mouth. I opened my mouth and gladly accepted the food. It tasted so good, I considered for a moment if it may have been the best thing I have ever eaten. I changed my mind as soon as I got a small bite of avocado toast, deciding that was the new best thing. So much better than occasional moldy bread. Jackson smiled at me as I ate. After only one bite of eggs, and three small bites of avocado toast, I felt stuffed. I sighed as I placed my hand on my stomach.
"Oh, I'm so full," I groaned. Jackson put the food to the side.
"Doctor Green said it might take a while for your body to adjust to a normal diet again," he said with a bit of a sad tone to his voice. He leaned forward and smiled at me. "How would you like to go rest in our bedroom instead of here?" I lifted my eyebrows.
