A nurse escorted the family to the recovery ward.

"Muichirō is still under the effects of anesthesia," she explained. "So he may not be able to see you right away. A doctor will come by soon to give you a full rundown of his injuries."

"I don't think I want to be there for that..." Michikatsu muttered.

The nurse opened the door and led them into a dimly lit room. The beep of a heart rate monitor filled the silence, and a myriad of cables hung down from machines foreign to Yuichirō. He could barely see up into the bed, but he knew Muichirō was there.

He heard his Mother cry out.

"Muichirō! What did they do to you?!"

She burst into tears.

"Mama! Pick me up, I want to see my brother! Mama!"

Yoriichi lifted him up, and placed him gingerly on the bed.

"Be careful."

Yuichirō looked his brother up and down.

Stiff bandages covered Muichirō's entire torso, and he had a plaster on the right side of his face. He wore an oxygen mask, a little monitor was attached to his finger, and an IV needle had been stuck in his hand.

"He's breathing, right?"

Yuichirō whispered.

"Yes. You hear the beeping noise? That's his heartbeat measured in the machine."

"Oh..."

Mother was crying her eyes out.

"Why did they hurt my baby this way?! What—what happened to his hair?! Why him?! He's so sweet, he never hurt anyone...uuuu..."

Father desperately tried to comfort her, but was having a hard time holding back tears.

I'm so sorry Muichirō...I was very insensitive. I didn't know what was happening to you every night, I didn't know you were being hurt...Please forgive me! Please forgive your Daddy...

Yoriichi turned away, leaning on his twin brother's shoulder.

The silence in the room was interrupted when a doctor entered the recovery ward, holding a clipboard.

"Good evening...I've come to give you young Tokitō's injury report." He swallowed and took a deep breath.

He'd realized, after perusing the report, this was going to be very hard for them to bear.

"Tokitō Muichirō has a fever of 103.3 degrees, and is severely undernourished and dehydrated. He suffered blunt trauma to his head, chest and back and had a few minor cuts on his legs, caused by glass shards. There were several lacerations on his stomach, thighs, and back that needed stitches, and he was given a tetanus shot to prevent infection."
