i want to share my theory about mori and elise while i was reading mori ougai's book
elise is inspired by mori ougai's book 'the dancing girl'; a girl with sapphire eyes and golden eyes. in the book elise is sixteen years old while in bsd elise is ten years old. elise used to be much older in the great war, probably sixteen years old like the elise of the book (i'm also pretty sure it was confirmed in an official art by asagiri). in the book elise becomes mentally ill and age regresses due to the wrong decisions of ota (the protagonist). elise suddenly changes personality; ota describes her as childish just like a ten year old, and he feels responsible because he broke her. when does mori make wrong decisions? when does elise age regress? in the great war. it's also heavily implied that elise resembles yosano and dazai. mori broke yosano and dazai's psyche the same way ota broke elise's psyche.
in beast elise doesn't age regress because in that world mori didn't make the wrong decisions that he made in this world.
asagiri also wrote these words about mori:
every time ota sees elise he feels like he has committed a sin and blames himself for it. elise is mori's ability ─ a part of him; and she's the manifestation of mori's 'mistake' and 'regret'.
