The world felt as if it stopped spinning; everything was moving in slow motion. Finally coming back to your senses, you quickly pulled away, only to see Ringo in the corner of your eye, standing there with his jaw on the floor. You whipped your head to face him, feeling your face heat up as you stumbled to your feet.
"Ringo! It's not what it looks like." To anyone, it was pretty obvious what it looked like, even to Ringo.
"Y/n," he swallowed as you thought of the worst. "You can speak!" He pushed away what he just saw, more interested in you finally speaking.
"What-?" You thought of the worst only to see what Ringo really cared about.
You stopped talking right away, sitting back down as you began to bite the inside of your mouth again. The awkward tension crawled right back in. There was silence between the three of you as Ringo mixed together the strange drink again. He handed you the drink, and you gave him a weak smile before chugging it down. You looked over to see Mizu sitting there without any emotion on her face, which made it hard to see how she was feeling. Ringo kept looking at the two of you back and forth as it stayed silent. He cleared his throat, trying to ease the tension.
"The remedy seems to be quite effective since you're not drunk anymore," Ringo commented, breaking the silence, as you only nodded while Mizu stayed still.
Mizu finally spoke; her voice was calm, causing both you and Ringo to get startled.
"Ringo, can I speak with Y/n?" You looked up to see her staring right at you. Ringo, sensing the reality of the situation, excused himself with a subtle nod, quickly leaving the two of you alone once again. You really wished Ringo stayed back as you didn't want to be left alone with Mizu after what you just did. Mizu got up and walked over to stand in front of you as Ringo shut the door.
"I didn't mean for that to happen," you began, your voice barely above a whisper. "It was impulsive, and I didn't think-"
"It's fine," Mizu interrupted, her tone still soft. "We both have a lot on our minds, and the alcohol likely clouded your thinking." You nodded slowly as you followed what she was saying.
"I just want things to be clear between us," Mizu continued, her gaze meeting yours. "Our friendship is important, and I don't want some misunderstandings to break our friendship."
Nodding in agreement, you felt a mix of relief and anxiety. Part of you felt happy that she still wanted to stay friends, but the other half felt empty that she only saw you as her friend.
"Maybe we should take some time," Mizu suggested, "To figure things out, to understand what we want from each other."
You nodded again, the gravity of her words sinking in. You didn't want to spend time away from her, and you already knew what you wanted - her. But you knew this wasn't possible as she didn't like you back.
"Let's not let this moment define us," Mizu said, her expression softening. "We're friends, and we shouldn't let something like this cause any unwanted feelings for each other."
But you didn't have any unwanted feelings against her. You knew what you felt, and that seemed as if it wasn't going to change any time soon. Unwanted feelings. The words echoed in your mind, and you couldn't shake the feeling that perhaps your desires were indeed unwanted. It was hard for you to come to terms that Mizu didn't like you, and you needed to just push your feelings away and not let it affect the weak friendship you had with her.
You couldn't help but feel a knot tightening in your chest as the words "Let's not let this moment define us" kept repeating over and over again.
"But what if this did define us?" The words spilled out of your mouth, and you regretted saying that immediately.
"We're-" "friends," she said, her voice calm but with a small tint of sadness as the word 'friends' slipped out.
As if your heart wasn't already shattered into pieces, the words only seemed to crush every piece into smaller grains. You began to pick at your fingers, fighting back the tears. You couldn't let her see you cry over something so little.
"Can you at least tell me why you don't like me?" Your voice was quiet, almost coming out as a whisper. "If it's because I don't speak, I can change that. I'll keep speaking if that's what you want." Your voice was breaking. "I can change how I dress or even-" The sound of glass breaking interrupted you as you looked to see that Mizu was the one who threw the teacup on the floor.
"Stop it, Y/n, I don't want you to change anything." You were caught off guard. Mizu's breathing became unsteady, and her expression was filled with a mix of sadness and anger.
"I like you, Y/n, is that what you wanted me to say?" The words crashed down onto you; those were the words you've been wanting her to say for the longest time.
You couldn't even respond; suddenly, you lost the ability to speak as everything only came out as a quiet mumble. But you needed to see if she really sincere about what she said.
Your voice, barely a whisper, trembled as you tried to respond, "Mizu, I-"
"Y/n, don't," she cut you off, her tone a strange blend of frustration and sadness. "I like you for who you are, and I don't want you to become someone you're not just to fit someone else's expectations."
The sadness in her eyes softened the edges of her anger, and you could see how she was really feeling.
"I've never been good with words, Y/n," Mizu confessed, her gaze now fixed on the broken teacup. "And when you asked me why I don't like you, it wasn't about not liking you. It's about..."
She trailed off, the words caught in her throat, leaving the sentence suspended in the air.
"If you knew... if you knew how much I cared, how much I've tried to keep my feelings hidden," Mizu continued. "I've been afraid. Afraid of ruining what we have, afraid of losing you completely."
"I won't leave," you spoke quietly.
"I know, it's just that," she paused, "my past relationship left me with feelings I don't want to experience again."
Mizu took a deep breath, her eyes meeting yours. You didn't know that Mizu was in a relationship before; a sting of jealousy filled you, but you couldn't be jealous over something from the past, especially if it was something that had previously affected her to the point she hid away her feelings.
"I care about you, more than I should," Mizu admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
The room was silent as her confession lingered in the air; you couldn't find the right words to say. You wanted to feel happy, but you didn't know how she felt. If she kept her feelings hidden away from you for such a long time, maybe she wasn't too happy with finally admitting this to you.
She kept looking at you in search of some kind of answer from you, any kind of sign that you were understanding what she was saying to you.
"What does this mean for us now?" you asked.
She didn't answer. Mizu gently cupped your face; her hands were soft for someone who fought countless people, you never noticed before. Her breath hitched as both of your hearts were beating rapidly, your eyes locking with each other. You knew what was coming, and yet the world ceased to exist as Mizu pressed her lips to yours. Your hand found its way onto her shoulder as she deepened the kiss; you didn't want this moment to end as every one of your problems you had before suddenly disappeared. She slowly pulled away as she removed her hand from your face, and you also released her shoulder.
As the two of you were in the moment, blocking out everything else, you failed to hear the door slide open, and there stood none other than Ringo, who had only come back for his bag, which he left in the corner.
