First Year

Chapter Thirteen

DRACO HAD TRIED TO GET HARRY AND RON IN DETENTION. According to him, he proposed a midnight duel between him and Harry in the trophy room. But his real plan was to get the two into trouble by running into Filch and Mrs. Norris over curfew, but he managed to run away.

Hermione met with Ariadne in the library, which was some sort of headquarters for the two girls. Hermione told her that the two boys tried to leave unnoticed to the common room that night, and they ended up on the third floor, which was out of bounds. They noticed a three-headed dog who was guarding a trapdoor. Ariadne wondered if it had something to do with their first visit to Gringotts, where Hagrid had an errand to run for Dumbledore, but refrained to mention it.

Finally, it was Halloween. Ariadne had oddly enough woke up earlier than the other girls, but of course there was always an explanation to that. As it was Halloween, the school must have planned some delicious food. And Hogwarts food always managed to meet Ariadne's expectations. But first they had classes to attend to, of course.

Ariadne sat on the couch in the common room and took the liberty of waking up early to finish an essay, oblivious to the world around her. ''Who would've thought that Ariadne Soleil would wake up before her peers? I'm surprised that you haven't run of to your Gryffindor friends.''

''Good morning to you too, Malfoy.'' she said and sat her now-finished essay in her satchel, taking a book out, and hoped that Malfoy would ignore her, but he took the seat beside her. ''Still on a last name basis? You can't stand angry at me forever.''

She looked up at him with a raised brow. ''I'm not angry, sometimes you're just insufferable.

''There's still time to change where your loyalty lies, y'know.''

''Don't waste your time, Malfoy. You can't do anything to change my mind,'' she said, returning to her book. ''What are you reading?'' he asked, changing the subject.

''Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration.''

Malfoy looked at the impressed and leaned closer to see what it was all about. It didn't go unnoticed by Ariadne. This is why she preferred the library. She closed the book and faced Malfoy. ''Can I help you with something?''

He must have come aware of the little distance there was between them, making him pull back with his cheeks turning a little red. ''Nothing, Addy.'' The new nickname rolled off his tongue effortlessly, and he couldn't deny the satisfaction that came with giving her a more personal moniker.

Ariadne only looked at him in confusion. ''Addy?''

Before he could answer, Daphne and Tracey appeared and sat on the couch across. ''Given the fact that you woke earlier, it must mean that the world is finally going to end.''

''Very funny, Daphne.'' Ariadne faked a laugh. ''I had to finish an essay. An essay you haven't finished yet.''

Daphne groaned at this. ''Don't remind me. What do I know about a creature big as a pixie and making my wand glow?''

Ariadne chuckled at her frustration with the subject. ''You mean Imps and the Wand-Lighting Charm; Lumos.''

''Yeah, yeah, whatever it's called.'' she said unamused. ''But really. Why can't you just say the incantation and just give your wand a flick? It would make it easier for all of us poor souls, who need to wave your arm off before mastering a spell properly.''
