I knew coming back to town was going to be hard. Coming back and seeing Ruthie was going to be excruciating, but I also knew it was time to talk it out or give it up. For four years now, I'd lived for nothing, but the sport. A few months back, I met a girl who caught my eye, and unfortunately for her, she liked me back. There was just one problem, I was hung up on Ruthie.
I figured I'd come home. We would talk to each other, I'd see where we were and just move on, on my own. Now that I was here and facing her head on, I wasn't so sure that was the plan anymore. Just looking at her, she took all the spark away from Jackie and her image left over in my mind's eye. Now, I just wanted to look at Ru.
I was on my way into the kitchen when I heard Early Scoff. "I don't get it. You hit a ball around on the ice?"
"No, I hit a puck around on the ice. What is it with this family and sports? It's like you're all immune or something." Devan bemoaned getting upset the more Earl complained.
"Whatever, that doesn't matter. What does matter is that I saw your wife Charlotte with another girl last week at the ice cream parlor in Pine Creek Village. Do you know anything about that?" Early chided.
I peaked my head around the corner of the kitchen hallway to see inside. Devan ran a hand through her dark blonde hair that reached her shoulders, sighing. "Earl, this isn't the weekend to get into it. Yes, I know. No, it's not yours or, actually, my business anymore either. So just don't tell Ru okay."
"Why? Are you two open or something? That never works, ya know."
Devan scoffed. "Fuck, I wish it were that. Nah, we split 6 months ago. She fell in love with someone else. But listen, if you tell Ruthie this it's going to ruin the entire week and she's planned for this all year. That's why we decided not to tell her. I love Charlie, it just didn't work out ya know. Not everyone can be like you and Tommy together their whole lives. But this is important to Ru."
"You really care for her. Don't ya?" Early asked, handing her a beer. "Don't get any ideas. She likes basketball, not puck ice or whatever." Early held up his pinky taking a sip of a beer.
She laughed at him, turning red. "And don't you go playing matchmaker. We don't know if Dru is even into her still. I haven't been here before, but I've heard all about you crazy people and matchmaking."
"Dru is very much still into her." I announced walking into the kitchen.
Early whistled. "I smell a competition coming on."
"No way." Miranda screamed running into the kitchen like she'd been hiding in a corner like I'd been. "I shouldn't be the only one with two husband's. If I can have two, Ruthie can have two too!" She laughed, slapping Earl in the arm.
"Miranda Finn! Don't say that!" Earl yelled at her.
Devan looked at me, looking me over from head to toe. "It's not an awful idea." She retorted. I rolled my eyes, but damn if she didn't look hungry.
Miranda clapped her hands, jumping on the counter between us. I realized that there was only about 6 feet separating me from her and how I didn't notice was beyond me.
"Miranda, stop this or I'm getting your men." Early chided, trying to pull her off the counter. She kicked him away making him scream as he ran down the hallway holding a spatula covered in grease from cooking dinner.
"Some advice, do the throuple thing better than me. George and Jackson have never so much as kissed or accidently bumped each other in our few threesomes. We play it like sister wives and I jump from bed to bed ya know. But I will say if we could sleep as one and fuck as one I'd be so into it." She sighed, putting her dainty hands over her crossed knees.
