The day is warm.

Warmer than it's ever been during a summer at Saltburn.
I dress in light flowy fabric to keep myself cool during the day.

Mother's breakfast awakens my senses and lights up the house as I trace it back to the kitchen

Mother's breakfast awakens my senses and lights up the house as I trace it back to the kitchen.

"Good morning Mum!" I hug her tightly.

She frowns, frustrated with her work as the usual perfectionist would be.
"Yes, hi Amaya, good morning dear.."

"Everything alright?" I question as I sneak a crispy piece of bacon and half a grapefruit for breakfast.

"In the last twenty-something years here at Saltburn, not one person has had a complaint."
Mum sighs as she consistently flips eggs.
"Then of course a worrisome guest comes to visit and is suddenly unhappy with my service!"

"Oliver Quick?" I ask in disbelief.
"He had the complaint?"

"Yup." Mother wipes the sweat from her brow with her apron, smacking her lips in disappointment.
"The gentleman requested eggs, fried over easy, then returns them with the complaint of them being too runny.
How embarrassing.
Here I am a five star Chef being tormented over eggs."

I peck Mum's cheek sweetly before leaving her to her work.

"Don't worry Mum." I joyfully console. "After today, I am more than sure that there will no longer be an Oliver Quick to worry about anymore."

"Oh really?" Her eyebrow lifts in curiosity.
"He's leaving already? With the whole summer ahead of him?"

"Oh you bet!" I assure.
"Especially if I have anything to do with it."

"Amaya Lennard.." Frowning, she shouts my full name.
"What do you have up your sleeve? You aren't causing trouble are you? And where were you last night? You were gone nearly the whole day."

I gulp, reminiscing on an evening of being higher than giraffe nuts.

"I-I was just catching up with Farleigh is all."
I tell half the truth.
"And no worries Mother! I'm causing no trouble whatsoever, just delivering justice is all."

Out of the kitchen, I can hear mother shouting for me,
"Amaya Rose Lennard, you behave yourself young lady!"

"Always!" I chuckle.
