Amaya's POV
Running my fingers across my old teddy, he's still exactly where I left him.. tucked into my sheets where I thought I would be coming home to him after a first day at my Mom's new job at Saltburn..
Boy was I mistaken..
My dusty bedroom makes me nostalgic of being a little girl, when my parents were still together."I probably should have renovated a bit.."
Dad scratches at the back of his head, nervously watching for my approval. "Now that you're all grown up, you probably hate seeing this kiddie stuff.""No." Gently, I smile. "I love it."
He lets out a quiet sigh of relief.
"Great. Well let's get you settled in."Dad and I continue to catch up as I unpack my small handbag. Together we dust and freshen up my sheets as we share a few laughs going down memory lane.
Although the home is just as I remember it, it's also become more like a man cave for Dad over the years.
At the same time, the house feels a bit lonely and sad..
I freshen it up a bit with a woman's touch and soon get to take a break with Dad after a few hours of cleaning.Opening the cabinet to the drinking glasses, I watch Dad nearly reach for one of my ancient sippy cups.
"Oh." He gulps, chuckling awkwardly.
"I guess you don't care much for juice in a sippy cup anymore, huh?""Not exactly." I giggle.
"But how about two of those?"Dad tracks the point of my finger to his shelf of beers in the fridge.
Dad pauses for a moment of disbelief..
"Oh sure!" He shakes his frown.
"Sometimes I forget how old you actually are.
A beer with my baby girl! Oh how times have changed."Dad pops the tops off of two cold ones as we relax at the dining room table.. the wood stain of the table is a bit faded and worn where he sits, however the rest of the table looks like new.
I begin to feel pity for him, knowing that when he is home from work, he must get extremely lonely.
I watch him closely, accepting his changes in appearance being that it's been years since we've sat together in person.
He's grayer now, wider, sadness filling his eyes, with added scars do to the dangers of his job.Like I've said before.. the world is full of two kinds of people.
All the work, none of the play. Or, all the play, and none of the work. When it comes to my lineage, we haven't been as fortunate as the Cattons.Dad has been a fisherman since he was a teenager, and when I say fisherman, I don't mean fishing off of a cute little pier on a warm summer's day.
What I mean is, he is a commercial fisherman.
Months out on deep sea excursions dodging the dangers of the vessel, the waves, the sea creatures, and the storms..
Only a job someone with the utmost courage and determination could do..
