"Come on Mya you said that you would let me know what is going on why aren't you answering your phone?" I mutter hanging up the phone as my break was coming to an end. She told me that her appointment was at noon so I waited until one to call her. The problem is that she is not replying to my text or answering my calls, and I am starting to get worried. "Dammit," I itch for a cigarette but I left my pack at home. I reach for the pack of gum that I knew I put in my pocket and start chomping
"What's eating you son?" Uncle Tom asks as he wipes down the counter.
"My girl has a doctor's appointment because she wasn't feeling well at Tiffany's wedding and she isn't picking up her phone, so I am getting kind of worried that something went wrong."
"Well why the hell didn't you go with her today I would have let you taken the day off?" he asks in his deep country accent. This is kind of ironic because his name is Tom. But anyways he is my mom's brother, I know they have two completely personalities. Now I don't know if my mother was embarrassed of her southern heritage, or if she just never had an accent, but if you were to meet my mother you would have never thought that she grew up in Alabama. You would have thought that she grew up somewhere in Manhattan area with the way her stuck up ass talks and the way she looks down on others. Which is funny because James's friend Rick, my biological father, is the biggest redneck that I know.
"Now you tell, but in all honesty I didn't know," I said pulling my hair into a sloppy ponytail.
"You know I am not like most employers, if you need the day off just ask me. Now your Aunt Susan is a different story, she would have to see ya throwing up blood before she lets you go home. That is probably why we lost a few employees," he mutters the last part walking away.
"Hey why weren't you at the wedding yesterday?"
"Who in the hell as a Wednesday wedding, now that don't make no damn sense. And you know that I don't care for my brother and his family, you are the only that I can put up with."
"Thanks, I guess. Tom did you know that my mother was having an affair around the time that I was conceived," he stops in his tracks.
"This is not the time or the place for it."
"Why not, despite what you guys think I am not a kid anymore, I am an adult."
"If you were an adult you wouldn't be ignoring your father for so long now would you?" he makes that statement before walking to the back.
"Thanks Tom, I really needed that," I mutter sarcastically clocking out on the computer before walking out of the door.
"Where are you off to?" my aunt Susan ask coming from the back wiping her hands on her favorite apron.
"I'm going home to check on Mya, she isn't feeling well nor is she answering her phone," I stated impatiently. I love my aunt Betty but she talks too damn much and asks too many damn questions.
"Oh okay, when will you be coming back?"
"Tomorrow, I guess. But look I gotta go, I love you and I will call you by seven, is that alright?"
"Yes, that's fine."
"Okay," I give her a quick kiss on her cheek before walking out the café.
I pull out my phone dialing Mya's number as I walk to my car, but just like before she wasn't answering her damn phone. "Mya it's me, you're not answering my calls and I'm getting worried <sighs> I don't mean to seem clingy but please call me back," I left her a voicemail figuring that I should give her space. Maybe I am over thinking things, maybe she just has flu and had too much phlegm on her stomach. But she did drink the champagne, and then complain that it was too strong. How the hell can champagne be strong?
