Ever since that fateful encounter, reality itself had become nothing but a blur to the young priest. Day, night, mass, it all became so irrelevant
Sure, he could still fulfill his duties, but his mind was always elsewhere. He was, of course, focusing on this case
Sadly, it was much easier said than done
For all his research proved useless, filled to the brim with dead ends and theories that turned out to be little more than gibberish
Much worse than that, was the feeling he couldn't shake, that he was being watched by something. Its mere presence taunted Matthew
And one day, he felt this presence right outside his church
He didn't think twice before he rushed outside to find this being. He couldn't care less if it was pouring, he needed to find this thing, and finally get rid of it, not only for himself but for the world, including the little soul he failed
This mentality is what led him to an alley. He could feel his heartbeat rising, and for the first time, he could also hear feet running
Whatever this was, it was fast, and it grunted like an animal, but despite its frantic energy, Matthew could see no beating heart anywhere
Suddenly, his target reached a wall, and with manic laughter, it started to crawl up somehow. Matthew's eyes went wide at the sudden shift, and using his sensory skills, he quickly searched for a way to keep up with this thing
After days of no luck, there was no way he would let it get away
And fortunately for him, he found a fire exit
Desperate, he made his way up as much as he could. The metal was slippery due to the rain assaulting the material, but the moment he reached the roof, a wicked laugh filled his ears
Then the burning pain of something hitting his head, then the freezing air hitting his face, followed by the rain
And then...
Nothing

Matt: What...?
Slowly, his senses were coming back to him. He could hear the radio in the corner of the room, smell the food the nuns were preparing, and feel the softness of the sheets that surrounded him
But there was also something else. A heartbeat she recognized
Catherine: Father? Are you awake?
Matthew sat up slowly, with the help of the nun
Catherine: Careful, Father
He thanked her for her assistance, and that's when he felt something soft on his head, bandages
Matthew: If you don't mind me asking, how did I get here?
Catherine: A kind stranger brought you here. He said you had a fall, but fortunately, it wasn't anything major
Matthew: That's a relief...wait, what kind stranger?
Catherine: He's waiting in the other room. Would you like to talk to him?
Matthew: Yes, please
Catherine: Right away, Father
With that, she got up and left the room, leaving the man to try and recall the last things he could
