Luke
As Luke and Andromeda made their way through the dim, uneven streets, the night felt too quiet—too watchful. The weight of everything pressed down on Luke, more than just exhaustion. It was the burden of knowing what came next. Andromeda's steps faltered beside him, her eyes darting nervously toward every shadow, as though a monster might leap out from the darkness at any moment. Luke understood; it was always like this when the truth sank in for new demigods. That first realization—that the world was much more dangerous than they'd ever thought—hit hard. He'd seen it before.
Luke's body, still aching from the battle with the sea serpent, felt like it might collapse at any moment. His hand trembled, and he reached out instinctively toward Andromeda, though he hated showing weakness.
Andromeda pulled back at first, eyes narrowing. But then she must have noticed the way Luke's grip weakened, the paleness of his skin. Hesitation shifted into resolve as she caught his hand and squeezed, her fingers firm and steady, despite her uncertainty.
"You okay?" Andromeda asked, her voice a strange blend of fear and concern.
Luke managed a weak smile. "Just a bit drained." He swallowed, feeling a sharp wave of dizziness. "Your touch seems to help, though."
She didn't seem reassured. Her gaze was still wary of their surroundings. The night seemed to close in around them. With each step, she tightened her hold on Luke's hand, holding on to him as if he were the only thing keeping her grounded.
The two of them continued in silence, Luke's mind flitting between staying conscious and keeping his guard up. He figured it was time to fill her in on the essentials. She needed to know what she'd gotten herself into. "Monsters... gods... being hunted—it's the life now. For people like us."
Andromeda's face turned ashen, and for a second, Luke thought she might throw up. That would've been a first. Most demigods screamed or ran.
"So, who's your parent?" She asked.
"Hermes," Luke replied, his name tasted like poison on his tongue.
"How do you know that?" She asked, a suspicious, accusatory tone in her voice.
Luke winced, hating how familiar the question had become. "It's... complicated," he said, casting his gaze down the alley. He hated thinking about his mother and what had happened at home, the glowing eyes and the madness. "But my mother knew. Told me when I was young." His voice hardened as he added, "I've met him too. Once."
