Andromeda

Fireworks burst overhead as Percy, Luke, and Andromeda walked through the silent trees. The celebration for Percy was in full swing, the sounds of laughter and cheers in the distance, but the three demigods had more important things to take care of.

The trees loomed over them, their white bark occasionally splashed with color from the fireworks above. The only sounds were the boom of the fireworks and the crunch of leaves on the ground. Luke held a lantern, which illuminated the ground around them, but Andromeda still found herself tripping over twigs and leaves.

Luke looked back at her, a small smile gracing his beautiful features. The light from the lantern cast a shadow across his face, making the scar stand out on his skin. He held out his hand for her and she gratefully took it, interlocking her fingers with his.

"Talk about a celebration," Luke said, nudging Percy as they walked. "They really pulled out all the stops for you." Andromeda felt a little disappointed that they weren't able to join the celebration. It looked like it had been fun, fireworks, food, the beach. Andromeda tried to remember that they needed to expose Clarisse, that the quest wasn't over yet. But with Percy and Annabeth back, it almost felt like it really was over. It was hard to stay focused.

Percy was silent as they walked. He looked pensive, like he was thinking deeply about something. But he didn't share.

"Come on," Luke said, nudging him again. "You've said, like, two words since we left the cabins."

"Just..." Percy trailed off. "Thinking about what the oracle said."

Andromeda tensed, remembering the few cryptic lines Percy had shared with her before he left on his quest. She'd helped him decide who to bring, back when the prophecy felt like something distant, something they could outsmart. He'd mentioned that a friend would betray him. Back then, he thought Annabeth was more of an enemy than a friend, and Grover had been his anchor. Now, though? Annabeth and Percy were closer than ever and Percy still hadn't been betrayed.

"That I'll fail to save what matters most in the end," Percy continued. Andromeda hadn't heard that before. She felt a shiver that had nothing to do with the cool night air.
