(Mature chapter)

Andromeda

Andromeda staggered onto the beach, her limbs heavy with exhaustion. She fell to her knees, coughing up seawater, the taste of salt burning her throat. Her entire body ached, but her pride stung worse. Luke had saved her. Again. Just like the first day they met.

Luke collapsed beside her, his chest rising and falling in harsh, labored breaths. The storm still raged above them, lightning splitting the sky.

"You should probably keep listening to me," Luke muttered, his eyes closed, his body half-buried in the wet sand, rain soaking him to the bone. He spoke with the same casual, almost bored tone he always used, but Andromeda could hear the frustration underneath. Andromeda rolled her eyes and got to her feet. As much as she owed Luke for saving her, she couldn't help being annoyed at him. Did he have to rub it in all the time?

"I didn't need your help," Andromeda replied, shouting a little to be heard over the storm raging. Even as she said it, she knew it was a lie.

"What?" Luke scrambled to his feet, following after her as she walked back across the beach towards the woods and camp. "I saved your life!"

Andromeda quickened her pace, her frustration mounting with each step. She could feel Luke's presence close behind her, his voice carrying over the sound of the storm.

"I know you did," she snapped, her words laced with irritation. "But I didn't ask for it."

"You don't need to ask," he said, following her as she turned toward the woods. The wind blew relentlessly against her, her steps sluggish as her legs sunk into the sand. "You were drowning, Andromeda. What was I supposed to do? Watch?"

"I had it under control!" She quickened her pace, her voice growing harsher, the lie stinging as it left her lips.

"You were unconscious!" Luke's voice rose, louder than she'd ever heard it, his calm veneer cracking.

She spun around to face him. Her fists clenched at her sides, her wet hair whipping around her face. "I said I had it!" But even as the words left her mouth, they felt hollow. She had barely survived, and she knew it.
