Chapter Four

"Gooood morningg." are the first words I hear as I enter the kitchen on the morning of my first day of work. "Morning." I answer, putting in my best effort to sound cheerful.

Nathan is standing next to the coffee machine, sifting between a coffee bag and a box of tea. "Tea or coffee?" As much as I would love to have tea, I feel like coffee would be a better choice for this morning. "Coffee." I reach up into the cabinet to find two coffee mugs, then add, "Please."

I place the coffee mugs onto the counter then select the coffee creamers from the refrigerator. "You look..." Nathan starts. Expecting him to finish, I turn around to face him. When he doesn't, I raise an eyebrow, "I look?" I have become slightly insecure at this remark.

He seems to be searching for the right words, "Nice. Nice and professional." Interesting. If I must admit, that was the look I was going for, especially for my first day at work. "Thank you." I smile, then take notice of his outfit. "I have a meeting today."

"Ohh, have fun with that." I sarcastically say. "Don't worry, I will." He responds. I certainly do not envy him, I was never a fan of meetings, probably, because my attention span is that of a goldfish.

I glance at watch on my wrist. Damn it. I'm going to be late on my first day of work. How's that for a first impression? "I'm going to be late." I mumble, attempting to rummage through my purse and find my car keys.

Yesterday one of my friend, Lilly's friends, had brought my car to London. Before coming to live with Nathan, I had taken a week to visit Tom and Kelsey in Los Angeles, where Kelsey is working on some kind of modeling job. Lilly had promised to get my car to London somehow. She kept her promise.

On my way out of the kitchen, Nathan raises his hand to high five me. "Don't mess up." Such encouraging words. "Hmm, no pressure or anything!" I yell over my shoulder. "I'm kidding. I know you'll be great!" With that I slam the door shut in a hurry.

The drive to the office building is a short one, despite the morning traffic. With 10 minutes to spare, I arrive at Carter Mason's Publishing House on the 8th floor of the skyscraper. I won't lie, I'm slightly terrified as anyone in my position would be. I'd heard the main supervisor was quite intimidating.

"Good morning, ma'am! How may I help you?" The lady at the front desk asks, with a bright smile. She's wearing a plain black dress paired with a long gold necklace. "I'm Ellie Parker, it's nice to meet you." I stick my hand out to shake hers. "Ellie! It's your first day right?" The lady seems to instantly recognize my name as she energetically shakes my hand.

"It is." I place my hands back down by my sides. "I'll show you to our supervisor!" She steps from behind the desk and leads me down a glass looking hallway. Within minutes I have met the supervisor, gone over details of the job and he's shown me to my desk.

I sit down at the bare desk and set my purse underneath it. Some of the nervousness I felt on the way here, has vanished and I feel more at ease.

"Hi, I'm Connor." A face appears around the divider to my left. "Um, hello." I have trouble forming actual words and it isn't just because of the fact that the person has just startled me. Peering at me from around the divider is a most attractive blonde haired, blue eyed guy.

"Sorry, you startled me. I'm Ellie!" I quickly recover. Way to go Ellie, way to embarrass yourself in front of a hot guy. I should be thankful, however, this isn't as bad as situations in the past.

"I didn't mean to startle you, I apologize," He pauses, then says my name, "Ellie." His voice is so smooth when he speaks that it could give someone chills.

"No worries! I'm always getting startled for some reason." I make up some lame excuse. A smile tugs on the corner of his mouth, "I'll try not to startle you again in that case. I'm over here if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask." With that, he disappears back behind divider almost as if he was never there.

Surprisingly, my first day isn't too stressful, workload wise. Around 5:00 pm, they allow me to leave. I can't wait to go home and take a nap. The coffee from earlier today wore off way to quickly.

I gather my things and push my chair underneath the desk, preparing to leave. This all seems so grown up, it's a strange feeling.

"Hey Ellie, wait up!" I hear the familiar voice from earlier. I turn around to find Connor walking my way.

"Are you heading home too?" He asks once he's finally caught up to me. If he was anyone else I probably would have given him a smart ass answer, but considering I've just met him today, I keep my mouth shut. I nod my head and give him a smile.

We both step into the elevator and he presses the ground level button. "How was your first day?" I haven't decided what my take on him is yet. He's certainly nice.

"It was alright, I think I'm going to like it here." I respond. It's just the first day, there's not much I can say.

"Great. Like I said earlier if you need any help with anything, don't hesitate to ask." He flashes me a pearly white smile. "See you tomorrow, Ellie."

"See you!" I give him a small wave and return his smile then get into my car.

Nathan is already home by the time I get there. He doesn't look up as I enter the living room, so I sink down into the couch beside him. Sheet music is resting on his lap and a pencil is in between his fingers. Not wanting to interrupt his train of thought, I remain silent and slip my heels off.

The sleepiness I'd felt all afternoon comes back to haunt me. I rest my head on Nathan's shoulder, still careful not to disturb him and close my eyes.

"El, wake up." I hear a voice speak softly. I squint my eyes, "What?"

I suddenly realize that I had fallen asleep. I sit up to find Nathan staring at me. "Tired?"

I nod my head slowly and let out a yawn, "How long was I asleep?" He looks at his watch, "Not long. I ordered some Chinese food."

This boy is going to make me fat. "I love Chinese food." He chuckles, "That's why I ordered it. I cook sometimes, I swear." Now it's my turn to giggle, "Nath, it's fine."

The food arrives rather quickly, which is great, because I'm starving. "Tell me about work." Nathan says as he takes a bite of friend rice. With that, I begin to tell him about my first day at work.
