Chapter Six
I've always hated that conflicting feeling of trying to get up in the morning. It's always like a part of you knows you have to get up and get ready, but the other part would do anything just to stay in the warmth and comfort of bed. Let's just say that this morning I was not fortunate enough to experience that feeling.
I woke with a start, already noticing something was different. One, I was not in my bed and two, there were arms wrapped around my waist. I blink my eyes in a rapid motion, adjusting them to the darkness.
My heart jumps to my throat when I realize the situation I'm in. Nathan and I must have fallen asleep together on the couch last night. Ordinarily I would not mind falling asleep with him, but there is that tiny little detail of last night.
I attempt to unravel myself from his arms, but it's no use without waking him up and that's the last thing I want to do. Even if he didn't remember last night.
Finally, after about ten minutes, I successfully manage to get out of is grip. I pause, only briefly, to make sure that he's still asleep, then bolt up the stairs. By the time I make it up to my room and close the door, my heart is racing.
I sink down against the door and breathe out a sigh of relief. I'm so stupid, so incredibly stupid. This was such a bad idea.
I promised Tom I wouldn't start anything with Nathan. I think somewhere deep down he knows there is something between us. He probably knows better than we do ourselves.
I stand up, supporting myself against the door, then tiptoe, still in fear of waking him, over to my closet. The light is already on, probably since I forgot to turn it off last night, so I search for the nearest pair of running pants.
I quickly slip on a black pair and grab a garnet sports sweatshirt to with it. A short run will get me out of the house for a while.
On the way down the stairs I clumsily slip on my running shoes over my socks. Once I reach the bottom I'm ready to go.
"Ellie?" Nathan's sleepy voice calls from the living room. So close.
"I'm here." I peer around the corner of the stairs and into the living room. Nathan is sitting on the couch, rubbing his eyes. After a moment, he looks up at me with half-closed eyes.
"What're you doing?" It comes out as more of a mumble. He stands up from the couch and stretches his arms.
"I'm going for a run." I inch my way towards the door.
"Ew running." He steps towards me.
Unintentionally, I step away. He looks at me strangely, "Everything okay?"
"Um, I'm just not feeling well." Way to be awkward, Ellie.
"Are you sure you should go running then?" He looks almost worried.
"I'll be fine. I'll only be gone for a bit." I'm by the door now.
"Well be careful." He looks in the direction of the windows. "It looks like it's going to storm soon." I follow his gaze and sure enough, it does look like it's about to storm.
"I'll be quick." I respond. Before he can say anything else, I'm out the door.
.
.
I've never been much of a runner. Sure, I did a little running in high school on a team, but it's never been one of my passions. That statement is still true to this very second.
I'm dying. I have run about three miles, but still, I'm dying.
Around a mile back from the house it starts to rain, well, more like a torrential downpour. Water droplets roll down my face almost clouding my vision.
I run a little harder than before, wanting to get back to the house quicker. Maybe I should have listened to Nathan, but that would have involved awkwardly avoiding him all day. .
It's a wonder I can actually find the house when I get to it. The rain is coming down in sheets now and I'm almost positive that was thunder.
When I reach the front steps, I burst through the door without hesitation. I am soaking wet as I close the door to prevent any rain from coming in. I really hope this doesn't cause water damage.
Nathan appears from the kitchen with a confused expression. When he sees me, he bursts into laughter. "I told you!"
I roll my eyes at him, a piece of wet hair falling in my eyes. "Oh hush and get me a towel." I would get one myself, but I wouldn't want to get anything more wet than it needs to be. He disappears, hopefully to find a towel.
I slip my running shoes off next to the door, then wait for him to come back. After a few moments, he presents a navy blue towel. "I told you so." He shakes his head, a comical grin on his lips.
"Shut up, Sykes." I punch him the arm. At least I wasn't being as awkward as earlier.
"Need any help?" He asks innocently enough, but I can't help but feel like there is an underlying meaning behind his offer. I eye him, suspiciously, "No, I'm good."
Nathan raises his eyebrow, "You're acting strange today." Me? Strange? No, not at all.
"Must be hungover." I shrug. If I nonchalantly mention last night maybe I'll find out if he remembers or not.
"I am too." He states, simply. I look at him to elaborate, but he doesn't, he just stares at me. Great, Nathan. With that I'm left wondering whether he remembers or not.
